this is not a how-to book for learning hard-core traditional chinese medicine... and fans of macrobiotics should also know that this author's approach to yin/yan differs some from that of George Ohsawa's but i just see that as a positive really....

i like to be shown many different opinions and perspectives and make up my own mind(s) about topics, and i prefer that my "teachers"/etc. are likewise so inclined, so her not being a Ohsawa-droogie makes her more valuable to me, even though i happen to be a bit of a fan of Georgie-boy myself...

the "Herbs of Life" is laid out in a very user-friendly format, with the herbs being evaluated energetically as opposed to mechanically... she makes a point of walking you through many different techniques for the herbs' use/applications, and her writing-style is engaging and easy to follow/understand...

with other herbal-healing books i felt as though the reader is limited to the herbs that were only described/catalogued in the book itself, but Leslie's book is more a matter of a good set of "basic herbs" (time to raid the spice-rack & healh-food-store) but she gives you a new set of eye-glasses to "see" them with...

western and Chinese herbs are addressed (mostly they are the easier to find sort), and the importance of determining underlying causes for an illness/dis-ease as opposed to relying only on a laundry-list of symptoms...

'tis a good book. :-)
