Dead in the Family (Sookie Stackhouse, #10)
by Charlaine Harris
by Charlaine Harris
INCONSISTENT is the word for this book. That is, inconsistent with the other books.
There are just so many things that make dubious sense in a way too short book, which doesn't even take advantage of the subplots and just lets them rot and eventually spoil the book.
Not to mention that the actual plot was such a mess. Weak, really. Not a chance of any tension build-up.
I am also very bothered by the logic, which, for the most part is nonexistent.
The love scenes could have been a bit interesting, with Sookie's issues and stuff. But everything was "repaired" out of the nowhere and for no apparent good reason, leaving us "wtf?".
First of all, Eric becomes just a love-blinded version of his old viking self, this time, being entirely unbespelled. It is really hard to believe his sudden transformation, given that lately he has not been through any traumatising, life-changing experience that could perhaps explain it. Why the sudden change in personality? There is no trace of the yummy, juicy character he was. I am having trouble imagining Alexandr Skarsgard portraying this Eric.
Secondly, I feel that Sam was just shut from Sookie's universe. He basically had no impact in the plot whatsoever and he was just a filler character. Why then did Sookie go to dinner with him? Just to fill some pages? I was expecting some event taking place or something that might effect the novel in any way. Unfortunately, this book completely ignored Sam, even if it set the background for, perhaps, a more interesting role of him in a future book.
Thirdly, the thing with Bill had so much potential which was just wasted. Why did Bill need her help in sending a bloody email? If all that subplot could be solved with just an email, why did Harris go through the trouble of even including it? I think it was very wrong of her not to dwell on this more. We just get the impression that Sookie sends and e-mail and then BAM, Bill is better and possibly, on with his sister - which of course, doesn't make sense given Bill's actions in the previous books, but I am sure that the writer will arrange for those two to get together. It was really disappointing that the Bill issue was solved in 5 lines and not given more attention in a book so short, which definitely had enough space for more development in this part.
The FAIRY PART. This just a big fat NONSENSE to me. It is just illogic on so many levels!!! Why was Dermot put a spell on by Niall? And if so, why was he still against the good side in the war? If now he suddenly loved his family, how come he was against them. Why was the spell broken so easily? I am not referring to the actual way, but to the fact it took her 2 seconds to figure it out. Again, the book was so short and unsatisfying that this could have been easily exploited and developed. And why the fudge did they all end up in bed, like family? Why?
I am seriously expecting to see Michael Jackson as vampire in the next book. Maybe Princess Diana too. Hm, who else? Let me think. Maybe Napoleon? Vlad the Impaler? Jimi Hendrix? Cliff Burton? Julius Caesar? William Wallace? Kurt Cobain? I am looking forward to see who will get the chance to be resurrected as a vampire.
As to the actual plot, it was pretty much non-existent as well. No tension build-up at all because you don't know what the conflict is - oh, wait, there is none, except a fabricated one in the last 20 pages. Which of course, unravels with the speed of light and burns down equally fast.
And why was a 100 year old vampire stronger than both a bad ass Viking and a creepy Roman???
The were-wolf part was out of the nowhere as well.
In the future, I expect more sub-plot development and a more substantial main plot, with an actual tension build up.
P.S. The love scenes were quite crappy too!

I just finished this book and my feelings are very similar to yours. I had lots of "Huh??" And "Wth" moments. I love this series, the characters, the world, and I'm hoping it will get its mojo back with #11.

I could not wait to read this book. It took me a week to get through it. I read a stackhouse book in a day. I agree totally with your comments. It didn't flow like the others which I devoured and loved. Disapointment is an understatement. lets hope the next book is better!
I guess I liked it...it really left me wanting!! Especially after the obscene amounts of fanfiction, I've read over the last year...lol! I thought if there could have only been one good Eric/Sookie lovin session...it would have been soooo much better. I just can't imagine CH having them break up! It doesn't make any sense...I know all my friends and are I reading because we LOVE Eric & Sookie....why would she put all this into it...just to put her with Sam...he's more like the family pet...not a love interest! Also...I was really dissappointed with Eric in this book...what happen to our BADA** Viking Vampire?????? He was a big WUSS!!!! Half the book I kept wanting to ask if he wanted some cheese with that wine...good grief!!!
I am really an ERIC fan...I designed myself a t-shirt with his pics that say...I like my Vampires, tall, blonde, and Viking...trust me..I'm ate up!!!
I agree with all of this! Dermot being under a spell made NO sense to me. And Sookie just seemed to accept it. "Ah, so Niall put him under a spell..." even though it doesn't add up!
There seemed to be no cohesion from paragraph to paragraph - or even from the first half of a sentence to the second. I would turn a page, start to read at the top, and think "oh, whoops, I skipped a page" because it wasn't meshing with what I just read. Nope. I didn't skip anything. That's just how this book was!
hmm maybe ur right ... but i think Dermot was never in the dark side ... i mean he never attack anyone.. or he did?... he tried to warn jason about mel... and no one is sure about the death of sook's parents not even Niall ... i do agree .. the book needed more plots
but overall i enjoyed it very much

There se..."
I think he was under the spell already when he went to talk with jason ... jason said he was kind of crazy... maybe because what he said made no sense to him...
Juicy Fruit - I agree with everything you said, thank you for being so much better at writing than me and being able to put into words exactly how I felt. I am feeling very bitter at having invested so much money into this series...
Juicy,I'm glad I'm not the only one feeling this way. Rotting sub-plots is right! Someone asked me what happened in the latest book and even though I just read it, I couldn't really remember anything actually HAPPENING. It was bizarre, I couldn't get involved with the characters. It's too bad things have gotten predictable with this series too. Sometimes with these vamp series it would be nice if the author just bit the bullet and dusted some characters that are bloating up precious screen time. Does anyone care about Bill anymore? I'm so done with him.
I read this and the 6 before it within two weeks. To me, not only was this book far from interesting, as all the previous ones were, but this one did not advance the storyline at all. Every page I turned, I asked myself, "maybe something will happen in the next chapter..."
As a matter of fact, after reading all of these books back-to-back, I question if Charlaine Harris actually wrote this one! The writing style is just so much different than all of the previous Sookie Stackhouse books. All of the books in this series previously followed a similar pattern. Besides, why introduce Eric's maker now??? She full well know that the HBO series introduced him in the show already (and already disposed of him). It doesn't make any sense to me. While all of the previous books can have their own season on HBO...this one...well...let's see what the next one brings!

Couldn't agree more. What a shame. Kiss the fairy = break the spell. Lame, lame, shark jumping moment.Russian royalty psycho murderer = lame, lame shark jumping moment.
At least "Bubba" didn't appear this time.
Wow, a lot of strong opinions on this book. Some of the points you made make some sense, the others I don't agree on so much. I personally thought of this book as one full of information, stuff that we needed to know at this point. I agree, not a lot of what Charlaine Harris usually pumps into her books.
I agree with you 110%!! I was waiting for something to happen and it never did! I also wondered WTH happened to Eric. Especially when she walked in to his house and said "whats the plan?" what the hell was wrong with him? She totally changed his character! What a total disaster this book was!!
I totally agree with your review.I feel that if Charlaine is using this book to build on the next one why not wait and make larger amazing story. I would much rather waited longer for a much better book, it was a complete waste of a story... And why.. WHY? has charlaine harris done that to eric, it makes NO sense at all.
I actually listened to this one on audio book and when it finished i honestly thought that CANNOT be it and started checking for missed chapters.
Some major problems I had aswell.
Why was that little vampire strong enough to break his makers spine?
What spell was put on dermot? Why? The way the spell was broken was so pathetic, i expected a conversation after that aswell but they just got into bed.
I think charlaine just looked for a way to include every character. You know? Just for them to be mentioned and their histories explained to take up a few more line.. I feel very frustrated at the end of this..
I completely agree. There's note on the cover that says "Never before published". It should say "Should never have been published". What a complete waste of my time. No story at all. It's obvious she just dashed this book off just to get another title on the shelves. Please Charlaine, this is just embarrassing. I can't believe your editor didn't say something to you, or perhaps your editor was rushing you to write another Sookie Stackhouse book. Your characters seem to have regressed back to 8th grade. Really, if you don't have a story to tell, don't write until you do. Every book preceding this is quite good. What happened? What a disappointment. Glad I got if from the library and didn't spend money on this book. I want my reading time back so I can read something worthwhile.
I was (still am) a big fan of this series - as a matter of fact, when I first discovered it, I read the whole nine books in ten days and reread them again... then I had to wait one year for this? I agree with many of you, it's like an entirely different person took over Charlaine on this one. I certainly hope she will redeem herself with the next book.

At least "Bubba" didn't ..."
Bubba may have redeemed this sad story =|
I can't stand the endless explaining of all the minor tasks Sookie performs around the house. "I went home and did some laundry, I even washed the bath mat and hung it outside to dry." OMG thrilling!!! It's like she's writing it as an episode of True Blood.....but a much more boring episode.
I couldn't have said it any better myself. I only would have added that this feels like the end of the series to me.
I very much agree with your review. That being said, my opinion changed a bit after reading book 11, "Dead Reckoning," since it answered many questions for me. I think most series have at least one book that functions almost purely as a transition, and so far, I feel like this one is it for the Southern Vampire series.
I agree with everything you said!Mike - the True Blood series isn't really following the books at all. At first it really, really irritated me but then I decided to disassociate the two and never compare. Now I can enjoy both without my inner dialog constantly going, "that never happened!" or "that isn't how it went!". Your comment about Eric's maker already had been shown in the show so why put it in the book is a perfect example. Godric wasn't Eric's maker in the books. Godric was just an old vamp that wanted to die.
