Fran's review
Middlesex
by Jeffrey Eugenides
Yes! I thought it would be ridiculous from the cover description, but his writing carries it through. One of the best books I've read in the last few years.
Hey! Maribeth loaned this one to me. She said she loved it.
I will be promoting it from "soon to be read" to "read next"

Matt has been listening to this book on tape and he said that I have to read it.
Really interesting, funny and thoughtful. The author chronicles the life of Cal a hermaphrodite that lived as a girl until the age of 14. Set mostly in Detroit during the 60's and 70's. The tensions and growing pains within the city are reflected in Cal. Cal's family and back story also adds to this rich and insightful book.
