really liked it

Well written, occasionally grim, set in 1970s Birmingham (see "occasionally grim") -- overall a very engaging, readable novel. I can't resist a book that contains a line like "He was going to have write even weirder things, he told himself, if he wanted to sound like Henry Cow."
