OK, this book hits a little close to home for me, so I probably rated it higher than it deserves. Having lost my mother relatively recently, it's a book that digs right into the ribs of the mother-son relationship and its wonderful, special significance. Luckily, I did not have a father who "made me choose" one of my parents, so I do not "feel the protagonist's pain" in that regard. But he was able to evoke the brutal, raw emotion that losing a beloved parent and realizing that your life is forever changed, and overall for the worse, so it is very affecting in that regard.
