More like 3.5 ★.
I struggled with this one. The beginning was promising, but is slowly became boring and unrealistic. I just couldn´t relate to Cassel or anyone else. It seemed to me that he just acts like he does (lying, stealing, deceiving) because he´s from a worker family and he wants to resemble them, although he isn’t worker himself. There were some brilliant ideas, they were just buried under layers of dull and unnecessary cons, sometimes even predictable. I almost ended up on 2★.
BUT as I continued reading - like the last third of the book - it got better and better and the ending itself was amazing. I couldn´t believe I was still reading the same book. It was thrilling, it made me laugh, it almost made me cry!
The problem about The White Cat is that I think many people will stop reading half way through and won´t ever see the great ending. My advice : keep reading, it´s totally worth it!
P.S. And I just have to praise the way the author got rid of Cassel´s parents ( we all know “the orphan” routine often used in YA books) – at least of his mother – being in a jail for a love con? Nice!
