This book reads like a series of unfortunate deaths at the hands of government or authority. The characters mostly differ from one story to the next and their fates seem unavoidable. Since we don't get to know any of the characters that well, we are left with an overall tone for the dark era of communism (except for the last story that takes place in 14th and focuses on religious conversion).
