bookshelves: alternative-history, do-not-reread, fantasy

This book begins a 6 book alternate-history series which is set in a nineteenth-century America in which distinctly American folk magic, legends and superstitions are real.
In this book the forces of chaos try repeatedly to put an end to young Alvin, the 7th son of a 7th son. Alvin begins to explore his power in a small way, as well as some of the ethics of having and using power that others don't have.
While a little slow in places, this was a fascinating book that left me wanting to know more of the story.
