I went to hear Lois Lowry speak recently at Fitchburg State College, and she mentioned that this is her favorite book and that it is somewhat autobiographical. I was pleased to find an old, battered copy on my middle school library shelves. This is a beautiful story of a girl who moves with her loving family out to the country for a year. She makes some unlikely friends in her unconventional neighbors, and they become as important to her as her family.
