Tally Youngblood is fifteen, and still an Ugly. When she turns sixteen, she'll have the mandatory operation that turns her Pretty and she can move to New Prettytown to party with all the other beautiful people.

The only problem is Tally's best friend ran away rather than become Pretty, and new Special Circumstances says Tally has to track her friend down and turn in the renegade band of Uglies before she can become Pretty.

It's an interesting enough story, I suppose, although it could have been a lot shorter if he didn't spend so much time repeating things he'd already explained, but it's also one of those stories where the tension comes from the characters doing stupid things, and getting themselves into stupid situations that they could have avoided if they had even half a brain cell inside their stupid little heads.

I have no tolerance for characters who get themselves into precarious situations because they do stupid things.
