Read from May 12 to June 18, 2010

A great western novel about a young girl Mattie Ross who is out for vengeance for her father's murder by Tom Chaney. She hires the questionable marshal "Rooster" Cogburn whom she believes has "true grit" and joined by Federal officer from Texas LaBoeuf who is after the same man. I was most impressed by Charles Portis' development of each character particularly Mattie and Rooster and the witty dialogue between them. The long section of bringing the characters together and finding and tracking Chaney and his gang of robbers is paid off with a very intense climactic ending that shows real devotion and loyalty.
