bookshelves: urban-fantasy, mystery, 2010
Read from June 16 to 18, 2010

I was a bit confused at the beginning and once I started reading reviews that said there was no definite love interest in this book as I thought it was a PNR series, and not UF. The cover is what made me think this since it does have a man and woman, both topless on the cover (reading this while at the tire shop having my tires balanced and rotated definitely earned me some looks! LOL!)

This book is actually all about a murder investigation, a terrifying hunt for a book of power, and half-asses attempts on the part of the heroine to remain alive despite her naivete and ignorance.

Sometimes I wonder whether Mac is just TSTL. Jericho follows her back to her hotel and wakes her up at 2 AM to exchange information and despite knowing she had barely escaped his bookstore and felt scared of him she let him into her room?! Couldn't she at least have suggested they talk down in the lobby! But then she blames her behavior on still being numb and reckless from her sisters death. Speaking of her sister being dead - I think she spends a majority of this book coordinating her outfits and making sure her manicure and pedicure in Razzle-Dazzle-Hot-Pink-Twist or Gentleman-Prefer-Blonds-Pink looked good. Really? I mean seriously Moning will spend a 1/2 a page describing what Mac is wearing including accessories, nail color, and heel height! If I was in a foreign country attempting to solve my sisters murder I think my nails and matching Juicy Couture purse would be the last things on my mind. Especially after having been assaulted in her room the night before by Jericho who left deep enough bruises that even the under wire in her bra hurt her or constantly being hunted by Fae Shadow Hunters. And I wish wish wish she would stop spoiler-ing her own book. I hate all the little side comments she makes to the reader like 'I didn't know then..." or "Later I would see that..." or "If only I could have known..." Why can't Moning just let the plot unfold itself. Why ruin the suspense and tension with this comments.

Also as someone else wrote in one of my status updates, Mac comes off as one of those Americans - the Americans that travel to foreign countries with no attempt made at experiencing the culture, trying to understand the people, and expect everything to be handed them on a silver platter. Basically Mac's whole personality problem boils down to this - "Mine is the 'entitlement generation'...The EG is made of of kids who believe they deserve the best of everything by mere virtue of having been born, and if parents don't arm them with every possible advantage, they are condemning their own children to ostracism and failure...Most of the EG believe that if there's something wrong with them, it's not their fault; their parents screwed them up, probably by being away to much." This take on life is disgusting to me. Now she does admit that her parent's didn't screw her up but she definitely still has the entitlement expectations.

And how the hell did she channel her inner Buffy like that, surprising even Jericho???

Jericho...talk about an ASS. Yes, he should dark, dangerous, selfish, but (and maybe it's just me) but I need my characters to have at least ONE redeeming quality. Just one - that's all I am asking for. Jericho though is nothing if not dedicated to being a secretive asshole. Then when he decides he is going to teach Mac how to kill does he start in a gym showing her moves, and instructing her on how to wield a weapon? No, he takes her gallivanting through the streets of Dublin in search of any dangerous Unseelie to release her on. I guess nothing compares to on-the-job training. And sure he gets to play the part of a hero at one point, and I don't think he is her enemy but seriously, what an ass. Who knows though...I guess everyone should be given the benefit of the doubt that they can have some sort of good person inside, but considering Fiona thought this and he put her in her place about it I am still doubtful.

The inconsistencies are a bit annoying. For instance on Page 43 Mac falls into a deep dreamless sleep, but 6 lines later when she is awakened she claims to have been having the most vivid dream. So vivid she could taste the Corona and feel the sand beneath her feet. Also things are just downright wrong. When talking about the book she claims that something created a million years ago would have crumbled eons ago. There are 4 eons in Earth's history with the shortest being half a billion years (that's Billion...with a B). I know I am nitpicking but I am an archaeologist and museum worker. These things are blaring to me. Also annoying are the number of pop culture references she makes. Now I know this book was not written nor expected to become a piece of timeless literature or anything, but it severely dates the work.

Despite ALL THIS I actually enjoyed this book. I know, I don't understand it either. I think its because of the world. The Fae, their caste systems, artifacts, abilities, and insanities were extremely interesting. Moning managed to feed me just the right amount of information to draw me in and keep me enthralled by them. For this alone (and maybe just a little bit because finally Mac started to grow me) I will definitely be continuing this series - especially since this one doesn't really have an ending. Thankfully everyone else says it only gets better from here on out too, which seems probable with how awesome the building was. The overall plot seems like it will be one hell of a ride.

And has anyone noticed the blurb for the second book Bloodfever sounds exactly like the blurb for this book?

*****

SPOILERS

I think it's a cool idea that the Fae can slowly claim bits and pieces of the city and turn them into Dark Zones but it seems silly that no one would notice/remember these sections of the cities. I mean it just doesn't seem plausible that Mac, a 22 year old barely schooled person would think to look at old maps and notice the missing streets but a police officer or city ordinance person would not be aware of. I'm sure people have older maps in their homes/libraries/etc. It just seems silly that these areas would go unnoticed. And yes I realize magic and glamor is a part of this, so maybe the only way this would make sense is if even the maps or the people's minds themselves are automatically glamored as soon as they looked at a map and made the connection but this is never explained.

Laura the Highland Hussy You wil LOVE this series! And there are 4 books out with the last coming out Dec. 7, so it won't be as hard for you with any cliffhanger endings!

Laura the Highland Hussy Oh, I just read your status updates, and I agreed with you on all of that, except by the time I'd read a couple of books, I think I realized we need to see her being a silly frilly girl to see how much she grows. Promise from Bloodfever on, not as much girly stuff

Laura the Highland Hussy It's me again! :)
The cover is from a Highlander book KMM wrote and changed to turn into Darkfever...she didn't have time to get a new cover so they used her Highlander cover.

Ariana AHHHHHH! (Hello btw ^_^) I can't wait for you to read the rest of the series, it just gets better and better until you can't stand it anymore andthenyouhavetowaitforthelastonetocomeout!!!

:D

Btw, my cover didn't have a man and a woman on it. Just a badly photoshopped picture of a cobbled street in lamplight, I think that's why I thought it would be boring to read.

The Holy Terror ?

I agree with everything you thought was bad about this book, but I don't understand the high rating. I think you're being waaaaay too generous with your stars.

Hrm.

Kat Kennedy Mac never really bothered me - maybe because when I started reading this series, I was 23 and can be pretty similar to her!

I'm glad you enjoyed it. Keep reading - maybe Barrons will grow on you. There's always V'Lane if he doesn't.

Laura the Highland Hussy yumm...V'lane..or Christian mackelar

Bry I think I gave it so many stars Shannon because I felt like that as annoying as Mac was I still read it crazy fast because I was interested in the plot and really enjoyed the world Moning created. And who knows, maybe after a few days I will lower it. Maybe I am riding the I just finished it, yay high. But as more time goes on and I think about it more things will annoy me! LOL!

I will definitely keep reading!! I would have preferred the other cover. This one just didn't portray the story accurately to me.

V'lane was crazy too!! He seemed to minor a character in this book to really pay much attention to him, but his few appearances were insane! Who's Christian?

The Holy Terror I agree with you that the worldbuilding saved the novel. But everything you listed just seems to outweigh the good so much more.

Again I say, hrm.

I actually liked V'lane, he was the only character I really cared to learn more about.

Laura the Highland Hussy Oops. My lips are sealed til after bloodfever

message 11: by Bry (new) - rated it 3 stars

Bry The more I thought about the book and looked through other books I have rated 4 stars I did end up knocking this one down to 3. But I am still hoping that the next few in the series are better!

Maybe I will hold out for Christian then and hope that he proves to be a better guy than Jericho and V'Lane are currently! LOL!

Laura the Highland Hussy I think that I was in the I hate Barrons camp at first, and I couldn't figure out why all the boards said they wanted Mac and Barrons together. I don't think I liked him til Faefever, and even then I liked V'lane much more. But in Dreamfever you get to see a different side of Barrons...and I still like V'lane :)

LethalLovely~I'll Be Your River Awesome review, Bry! I laughed my ass off.

I too thought that Mac was pretty ditzy & annoying but now I enjoy that aspect of her character. As you continue through the series you really see how much she changed from a selfish southern belle to this hard-edged badass who's had all her dreams taken away. It shows how much she has grown as a character from the "Rainbow Mac" she used to be.

I've never much liked Barrons but he is so sexy in ruthlessness. I have this Pride & Predjudice thing going on with him where I hate him & think he is a total asshat but I still really really want to bone him!

As for thinking this was a romance, I did also. I'm so used to KMM's Highlander romance series that I immediately presumed this was similar. It toke me a few books to warm up to this series after finding out it was something I wasn't expecting but now I really enjoy it.

Bry Maybe I will switch camps then when it comes to both Jericho and V'Lane, but who knows!! Maybe when the series is over she will meet a nice normal man instead! LOL!

Not sure I could ever get used to Mac's ditzy-ness but hopefully as she gets more badass I will stop seeing the stupid antics that drove me nuts in this book.

My only sad thing is that I have heard she continues to use plot spoilers like "If only I had known..." etc throughout all the books. Argh, that just irritates me.

Kat Kennedy Stress less. People like what they like. I personally loved this book. I really enjoyed so many aspects of it and was quite surprised to find that many people found Mac annoying. Who knows, you may enjoy the next one, you may not. Just give it a go and decide from there!

:D I'm glad you did get some enjoyment out of the first one though!

Tatiana Bry, I am with Kat on this one. Don't listen to anyone encouraging or discouraging you. The nature of this genre is such that a lot of enjoyment depends on the narrator (99% of urban fantasy is written in 1st person), so if you really dislike Mac now, you will most likely not care for her later either. So, why bother with something you dislike? I myself abandoned several series because I didn't care about their "voices," even though many of my friends like the books. Life is too short! :)

LethalLovely~I'll Be Your River I agree with Kat & Tatiana. If you liked it well enough to continue this series, go for it & if not, don't. There are too many other fantastic books out there for you to force yourself to read something your not into. I've had a gazillion people encourage me to read the second book in Patricia Brigg's Mercedes Thompson series but I know myself well enough to know it's just a lost cause for me. Although I am grateful to that one friend who rec'd her Alpha & Omega series which I ended up loving.

Btw, sorry if it seemed like I was trying to encourage you to go ahead with this series. I only meant to explain what I liked/didn't like about #1.

Bry I actually appreciate that people want to tell others what they liked and disliked about the series. I figure others might point out somethings I may have missed or misunderstood.

With this series in particular I want to continue reading because of the plot and world building. Mac did super annoy me, but hopefully her improvement and the continued awesomeness of the plot, etc will keep me entertained and enjoying the series.

Cassidy I haven't finished it yet but I think it is really .. interesting so far. I think the only thing that is keeping me reading is to see if Jericho is some crazy rapist... I think its coming he is a creepy guy I would never want to be alone with a guy like him

message 20: by The Flooze (last edited Jan 29, 2011 12:22pm) (new) - rated it 2 stars

The Flooze ::clapping::

Yes, Bry. Yes to everything your review said! I just finished this one and like you, I didn't hate the book but I couldn't connect with Mac or Barrons in the slightest. The interjections from Future Mac drove me nuts. Barrons is like a gorgeous but deadly animal that I would admire from afar - far afar. I found V'lane creepy and I don't think I could forgive the almost-rape incidents and accept him as a love interest. As for Mac herself, she's not just naive. She's small-minded and utterly blind to her ignorance. That I'm going to have a very hard time forgiving.

I have the next one out from the library and I'm about to start it. We'll see if this Mac 2.0 opens her eyes any, but right now she's a judgey little cow. Grrrr!

Ariana Whoop whoop!!!
