This text is valuable in that it presents an emotional and descriptive analysis of the conditions of the trenches. It is not a valid historical account, because it is steeped in presentism. Fussell is trying to filter his own WWII experiences through the conditions of WWI, and draws on literary analysis to paint a picture. Make no mistake, he sites sources much like a historian would, but his purpose is different. Acknowledging this is important. Other than this reservation, it should be pointed out the Fussell's book is an enjoyable and fascinating read with provocative stories throughout.
