Very enjoyable and full of fun facts like where the name Betelgeuse came from (the Arabic Yad Al Jauza meaning "hand of the great one"), how once the universe cooled down enough after the big bang molecules started forming all over the place and filling up the table of elements right and left, how if you fell into a black hole you could be pulled apart atom by atom and extruded from the other side, and on and on... It's also fun to read all about how Neil is truly an astronerd and has no qualms about telling James Cameron how he screwed up the sky in Titanic. This book is all over the astronomical map subject-wise.
There's a 6 page reference section so I'll probably be adding some of those books to my to-read list.
And there's a not entirely satisfactory set of indexes, one for names and one for subjects. It's not that big an index so you don't need to pull the names out - it wouldn't take any longer to find them and might take less time if you don't have to figure ou...more
