I was quite surprised at this book. Although it seemed very amateur and haphazard, it managed to keep my interest. It might've had something to do with the British actor reading the book (who was fantastic) but I enjoyed the whole thing and have already gotten the second book on CD.
It was almost too much like Harry Potter. You can't help but compare them (and nobody can hold a candle to J. K. Rowling.) Still, it was not without it's charms. Mostly I found the contests and trials very interesting and well thought out.
The characters were interesting enough, and the author knew how to create dramatic situations, but the plot was a little too complicated and didn't make a lot of sense. Too many minor characters with too little story time make a confusing book where you don't really care whodunnit as long as someone gets caught in the end.
And yet I still gave this four stars. Don't ask. I'm as confused as you are.
