really liked it
bookshelves: science-fiction, teen-fiction

This was the second time I read this book, and I think I liked it even better the second time. In a society where all boys and girls who turn 16 get to turn into "pretties", Tally can think of nothing she wants more than to join her best friend Peris as a pretty. This is until she meets a new girl friend named Shay who introduces Tally to a different way of thinking which includes life in the Smokies. Shay and a group of teenagers run away to the Smokies before they turn 16 because they don't want to become pretties and look the same as everyone else. The action becomes intense when the Special Circumstances group invades the Smokies and Tally has to decide which side she is on. A fast-paced sci-fi action thriller. This book works wonderfully with book club groups, especially for girls in 7th & 8th grades - gives you lots to discuss regarding what constitutes beauty.
