I liked this one too, I didn't give it a 5 because there were loose ends. I know Butch and Marissa would reappear in the next BDB books but I felt like they still have unresolved issues, I was expecting a major heart-to-heart talk, sort of character redemption but I guess that's another page of dialogue so let's get on with the program.
Despite that negative paragraph, there were a lot of remarkable things I loved in the story.
First, the characters. Their developments were really gradual and convincing. I liked Butch when he lived with the brothers, the author really emphasized his being someone lonely who finally found solace with the Brotherhood, even though he's human. I also like Marissa and how she took control of her life. The way she snapped was good, someone like her really needed that, but I really liked her dresses, what a waste. My favorite Marissa scene was where she cast her vote as head of the family in the Princeps council meeting, it was like a big "hell no!"
Second, the well-developed story-line; Ms Ward gave us snippets of the future events and possible couples in the previous books, she still gives us a recap on Butch's estranged relationship with his family, and Marissa's outcast status in the glymera. I didn't see what was coming when Butch was captured by the lessers, I liked the originality of the events, it made me anxious, made me wonder and I liked that the loose ends were tied.
Lastly, the entertainment, and quality of the book. The humor was classic, there were family values, emotional moments, and I'm still wondering what would become of John Matthew, and when would Tohr come back. It was great how the author connected the dots - why he was always shunned by his father and siblings was revealed by his mother, thus shining a light in the dark.
There were some gay moments here between Butch and Vishous, mostly on the latter's part. He really has a complex character, it made me wonder how he loves Butch because he's really possessive when it comes to him. I can't wait to read the next!
