I was given this book as a game from to read books outside the normal comfort zone.

Despite the easy predictability and functional prose, I rather enjoyed this novel as casual reading, even though its is well outside my normal range of interest, and it should probably classified under "women's fiction" or some other similar grouping. My biggest complaint about it is the general lack of detail and atmosphere. Although significant parts where set around the Greek Islands during WWII in a leper colony, I was never truly brought to the place vividly--the way great historical fiction can transport the reader to a different time and place. Given the unique setting, what I wanted was a plate full of meat, gravy, fat, and gristle, but ended up with a lean cuisine meal. It was OK, I'm glad I did read it, but it wasn't exactly what I would have ordered off the menu myself. 3.5 stars.
