Old fashioned book with little conflict or tension. The protagonist Mr. Bridge's biggest foe is himself and his inability to express the rich emotional life he keeps bottled up inside. By the end of the book, he's older but no wiser, and this lonely fact saddens him--that he's singularly unable to reach out to the woman he's married to who provides him such comfort. While Mr. Connell writes beautifully, and each character is beautifully portrayed, too many opportunities are missed to show the effect Mr. Bridge's stunted emotions have on those around him--his two daughters, his wife, his son. Thus, a book which could have been truly phenomenal rates only 3 stars with me.
