Janet The author,Bob Welch,writes a column for the Register-Guard and first wrote about Frances Slanger in a newspaper column. It was the response to that column, including finding out that one of 4 surviving nurses from her unit also lived in Eugene, that prompted him to do more research and eventually write the book.
