bookshelves: realistic-fiction

Alex, a teenage boy with HIV is attacked one morning while in his car. The attacker bashes his windows with a baseball bat and also hits Alex. The only witness? A girl their age with down syndrome. The book goes through the victim, the suspect (school bully who claims he did nothing) and the witness, each telling their own story.
This was a quick, mysterious and unusual read by one of my favorite authors. While it did keep me guessing, I felt like there needed to be an action scene. Every good mystery has one, so wh not this one? Overall I would give it a 3.5 rating. I really like the author, but I definitely like her retellings, Beastly and a Kiss in Time (and hopefully Cloaked will be good when it comes out) better than her mysteries and realistic fiction books.
