This book could have very nearly been a disaster. It could have taken the sour young-adult fantasy route that I'm experiencing more and more these days. It even had the dreaded love triangle. But, I was pleasantly surprised in the end.
This books is about a girl, named Aura (the name made me cringe), who can see ghosts. Which is not unusual because everyone born after the Shift can see the violet figures of people who once were. The night of his 17th birthday, Aura's boyfriend, Logan, dies. He isn't completely gone though, and haunts her whether she wants him to or not. Then enter Zach: the sexy foreign exchange student who has a secret nearly as big as Aura's own.
This book moved quickly and fluently, without just being comprised of action. I was sucked in nearly immediately. I was reading this on my laptop, so I began taking my laptop everywhere. The writing, while not particularly stunning, was fluidly done.
The characters were strong. Aura, the main character, was no Mary Sue. Assertive and passionate, she was quick-witted enough to hold her own in the tensest conversations. Logan was perfect in that he wasn't perfect. He had a temper, but was overall very sweet. Even though he was dead for 90% of the novel, he managed to develop through out the story.
And then there was Zach. Oh. My. God. I think I'm in love. All foreign exchange students are sexy, but a Scottish one? *melts* Smith-Ready must have dived into the deepest parts of my psyche, because he is a man of my dreams. And the love-triangle was well-done. All the emotions Aura felt were believable, and I think readers will be conflicted as to whom to favor.
This was a smart paranormal read. The plot was original without being completely out-there. It was exciting and entertaining, with plenty of unanswered questions left at the end. Once the sequel comes out, I guarantee ya I'll be one of the first in line.
Oh, and I thought the cover was ugly, but that besides the point.

And I love tortured musicians =D LOLI sometimes have trouble with accents while reading, it seems like I can never get the voice straight in my head and it ends up sounding like a cross between the leprechaun from Lucky Charms and the Brave Heart dude with the red hair. @.@
I need to work on that to get my swoon going.
I'm the opposite with HP LOL I can hear it tooo well. It's so bad hat after reading the series every book after will have a British accent for weeks.O.O
Mmmm, I can do southern alright, I think it's mostly Scottish and Irish I have a problem with, I can never get the right voice down so 9 out of 10 times it taints my experience.
Haha. There should be an accent exchange program. I would join....I would like to have an Aussie one.
That would be sweeet! If I had to pic one I think I'd go with British (and no it's not because of my love for Rob Pattz:P) I just love the way they talk. >.<
I think its cool how British people can tell where another British person grew up just by their accent.
Morgan wrote: All foreign exchange students are sexy, ... So? That's an interesting - albeit questionable - opinion. It means going abroad makes you attractive. Organisators should state that on their brochures (maybe they already do). You would have loved to move into the dorm I lived for a semester, probably. Only about ten of the 90 "inmates" weren't exchange students.
My school has had a few attractive exchange students in my time, but they have all been gay. Lucky gay guys.
We never had exchange students around when I was still in school *pouts*My boyfriend's sister had a girl from Spain who tried to kill their cat. The cat was on a very strict diet because she was old and they specifically told her NOT to feed her leftovers from her plate. At one point everybody but her and me left the dinner table and she started feeding the cat stuff. I told her to stop doing that, using a much more colorful choice of words, of course.
SCOTTISH FTW! I require this sequel, post haste! Also, when I was in elementary school, we had an exchange student from Spain as well. He had this really disgusting black, diseased growth above his mouth that made it look like he was rockin' a Hitler mustache.
At that time, I didn't know to feel bad for him because let's face it, kids are a-holes.
In retrospect, I'd like to apologize to him for judging him. And write him a prescription or something.

Great review hun!
