I don't remember who recommended this to me. I think I saw a reference to it somewhere online. I am so glad I put a hold on it when I did.

First published in 1998, the 2010 edition has an introduction by the author that tells about his life while writing the comic the first time, in comic form. I could have read more of this.

The main story is that of a comic critic, Leonard Batts, who is following his favorite comic artist/author back to his roots. What he finds in the artist's hometown of Hicksville New Zealand is not what he expected. No one wants to tell him about Dick Burger and it isn't to protect him. Something bad happened that Dick caused. Finally Leonard gets part of the story out of Sam, another local comic artist who has known Dick since they were kids.

If you haven't read it, you should.
