Okay - I think I was a bit thrown off because my library copy had a "Sci-Fi" sticker on it. But it's really not science fiction it's a historical romance (falling through the rocks was just a vehicle to get Claire to where she needed to be).

It's well written but the plot line is excruciatingly slow. Nothing really happens until about page 250 (!!!). The part I found interesting (where she becomes the palace Physick and the subsequent roots/herbs info) was comparatively miniscule. Jamie is certainly appealing but the whole red-hair thing was a turn off for me (I just don't do red hair). I kept imagining him to look a certain way until the description would correct me and it took me out of my fantasy...

The borrowed paperback copy was tattered and there was a HOLD on it (this must be a REALLY popular book!)so I had to return it midway. I definitely want to finish it but I'm not sure when. :)

Owen In my head he does not have red hair either. I don't go for that. I'd encourage you to give it another go. It does pick up (eveidenced by the fact that I'm now reading book SEVEN of the story).
