2011 Rebecca Caudill nominee—very interesting book with upbeat ending--Mom was killed an in car accident, leaving her husband and three sons, ages 5, 12, and 15. Dad sells everything, loads the 3 boys on a sailing boat, gives them extensive lessons on navigation and sailing, and takes them off to the Bahamas. At whim he moves them from island to island, refusing to discuss any of his decisions. And then one night he disappears, presumably having fallen overboard. The boys face a terrible storm, become shipwrecked, learn how to survive, and ultimately learn how to be a family. Told in 1st person through the eyes of Ben, the eldest son. Probably late 5th or 6th grade and up.
