A truly bizarre book, Palimpsest is the story of a dream city that can only be traveled to by having sex with someone else who has been there. The quartet of main characters, a beekeeper, a locksmith, a bookbinder, and a girl obsessed with trains, each have a "real world" issue and seek to get to the city permanently. The indiscriminate sex and the characters who are either obsessive, insane, or some combination of the two are a bit wearing in the reading, but the author has a style of writing full of poetry and metaphor that make her descriptions of even the tawdry and ugly full of beauty.
