As usual, Carol Berg doesn't go for the easy or obvious ending. The character you expect to save the world ends up barely saving himself, and, while the future of the kingdom he inhabits is a hopeful one, nothing is tied up in a neat, tidy package with a shiny bow at the end.

Her pacing slows a bit at the middle of the book; but, unlike other authors, there's no padding of the story. Believe me, if you skip the details, you will be completely perplexed at the end.

This will be worth a re-read in a couple of years.
