** spoiler alert ** Incantation was set during the Spanish Inquisition. The main character, Estrella, is a "secret Jew." She learns this during the course of the story. Her best friend betrays her and her family when she gets jealous and some real bad stuff happens.

The writing is very fluid and poetic. The author knows how to use words to their fullest. It is short and is a quick read, but demands your attention. The symbolism is nothing short of masterful. I saw a lot of symbolism before we discussed it in my class, but the class discussion opened my eyes to a lot that I initially missed.
