Lanyer was an early female English poet, and possibly Shakespeare's Dark Lady, so while not a well known figure in general she is of interest to feminist historians, Shakespeare scholars, and possibly Renaissance historians as well.

As someone who doesn't fall into any of those categories (my interest in her is genealogical--both she and her husband are distant cousins) I found the book interesting enough, and imagine it would have been more deeply involving had I been part of one of the intended audiences. The book maintains a fairly clear distinction throughout on what is known about Lanyer, and what kinds of reasonable speculations can be made.
