Shelter Mountain (Virgin River, #2)
by Robyn Carr
by Robyn Carr
I like these people. That's what a series comes down to, doesn't it? Do you want to spend time with this community of people? And the answer is yes. Robyn Carr isn't flashy or the best writer, but she has affection for her characters, a good sense of place (and Virgin River seems like a beautiful place to live) and she doesn't shy away from difficult material (in this book: domestic violence, drug use, and pregnancy issues). Yes, the characters get their HEA, but they work for it. Book #2 drew me in more than book #1 specifically because it revolved around Preacher, a quiet mountain of a man who takes in a fleeing battered wife and her small child one dark and stormy night. I had such affection for Preacher, a man who wanted little and took less, whose honor and goodness radiate through every page. And frankly, I like that Carr has a variety of former veteran soldiers in her stories, a tight brotherhood of men who are complex, honorable, and flawed. You don't see many stories (especially contemporary romances) with military characters, and it was a welcome change. And I also enjoyed how she introduces new characters with just enough back story to get me intrigued for upcoming books.
