The book started off very strong. The characters are excellent, the world terrifying. As is typical with Simmons, there is a gory horror element to it that is extremely well written, and terrifying. I generally don't go for that sort of thing, but Simmons does it so damned well, I just can't turn away. It's hard to put down.

I didn't give it 5 stars primarily because I was unsatisfied by the ending. It doesn't fit very strongly with the tone of the rest of the book, and seems to come out of nowhere. I still really enjoyed the read, but wanted it to end differently.
