I enjoyed this imaginitive fantasy world in which a young brother and sister make a promise to their dying father to save their people from a tyrant king. As the Count and Countess of a fairly remote and very poor township they are not equiped to handle an uprising but have little choice in the matter. For a time they are able to hold off the King's forces with Robin Hood style shaningans until Meliara is captured. I liked the stubborn and hard headed young countess and enjoyed her adventures; captured and imprisoned, escape and on the run, captured again, or is it a rescue? An interesting and subtle romantic tension sets up throughout the course of this book and by the end I was anxious to get my hands on book 2. I recommend having both on hand as it is only a two set series and both are quick reads.
