I pretty well always like or love Ian McEwan (with the exception of Saturday). Solar was a great surprise in that it is a comic novel; not such a great surprise that McEwan, as ever, pulls it off. By the end, I found myself rooting for, and protective of, his thoroughly despicable main character, and wondering why and how McEwan got me to do that. I definitely laughed a lot. I loved it until the end of the first quarter of the book, at which point something "bad" happens (something bad always happens in a McEwan book, and then the main character has to deal, or, more likely, not deal, with the ethical ramifications) and I feared......oh no, slapstick. But it didn't go in the direction I feared, so I happily read the rest. It took just a little too many divagations to double back around to the ramifications of what happens in the first quarter,but...what the heck.
