** spoiler alert **
I tried to give this book 3 stars but just couldn't bring myself to do it. I disliked the "hero" Jack so much that I actually stopped reading the book half way through. I only resumed it because I was between books and I was, well, half-way through so thought I'd give it another try. It does move along quickly at least. And I was interested to see how the story ended so I can't say I didn't like it at all.
My biggest problem was Jack. He begins his relationship with Morgan in order to get revenge against the man who slept with his ex-wife. The wife he didn't feel close to at the time and yes, it was his best friend, so that's a huge kick in the gut, but when he opens his teeny, tiny heart to talk about how this experience affected him it's because it made him doubt his ability to please a woman, to be worthy of love.
So he is in an extended fit of narcisstic rage when he decides to use a woman to pay his former friend back. And he secretly videos them having sex early on and emails it to his friend so he can suffer the way Jack has suffered. Eventually, he comes to regret that move because he manages to falls in love with Morgan and knows she will find out why he sought her out in the first place.
Jack and Morgan spend lots of time in close quaters because he is keeping her safe from one of the thousands of deranged stalkers that swarm through Romancelandria. So they have tons of kinky sex as Jack is a Dom whose control allegedly all of Louisanna whispers about. Personally, if I was going to whisper about Jack it would be his lack of emotional control. He threw a few good hissy fits when Morgan inadvertently upset his delicate ego and all he could think of was himself and not the woman he loves so much.
At any rate, Morgan discovers and learns to embrace that she is a Submissive and also falls in love. When she struggles with the D/s stuff and says why can't they have regular sex, the ever considerate Jack then treats her to incredibly lackluster Vanilla sex as proof that anything less than being dominated won't do it for her. Well, no, not if that is the only other option. What a jerk. But Morgan, in addition to being submissive doesn't seem very bright, at least not where Jack is concerned and agrees, yeah, when he makes love to her like he has no idea what he's doing and makes no attempt to engage with her emotionally (he barely talks or looks at her as they have sex) that he's right and regular sex is boring.
Then at the end when Morgan finds out how much Jack used her and the video he emailed of them having sex, she is devastated. Jack feels terrible but is too much of a coward to crawl back to her and beg forgiveness. Instead he hides in a bottle and other people convince Morgan not to work on her self-esteem but to go to Jack so he can apologize to her and they live happily ever after.
Jack killed the book for me. The big, bad dom was just a big, self-centered, emotionally-stunted baby. With an apparent drinking problem. I also had a hard time caring about Morgan who didn't show much sense or self-esteem. I'm pretty sure this is the first Shayla Black book I've read. I'll give her another try. Hopefully, all her heroes aren't as huge of jerks as old Jack was.
