bookshelves: paranormal-romance, smack-a-bitch-upside-the-head, reviews
Recommended for: all those wonderful insects who love to grub on the feces. I'm sending you a copy, baby!
Read from September 01 to 05, 2010

My Thoughts: I'm going to try to write this review spoiler-free. It's going to be difficult but I have complete confidence in my highly intelligent, extreamely busty self. Extreamely busty.

Recap: Sara Constantine is a newly promoted attorney who gets the bitch slap from hell when she finds out that her first case is the prosecution of the guy she played hide the sausage with a few nights ago, Lucius Dragos. And he's a vampire, oh my!

Things I Liked About WBC:

..................I'm thinking..........................

Aha!

♠ The diversity of the supernatural species. In this novel, we have vampires, weres, poltergeist, soul-suckers, trolls, mind readers & a plethora of other supes not usually mentioned in PNR.
♠ Serge, when I ignored that he had a boner for a mentally disabled vampire.

Things I Didn't Like About WBC:

♠ Our heroine, Sara. She spends the whole book flipping between hate for Luke because he's a criminal & desire for him from they're one night stand. She's also very afraid of him for most of the novel, which I find ridiculous. Apparently, he means to do you no harm or he would've deep-sixed you while you were busy staring at his pecks. I also didn't find her desire for Luke believable. She spends most of the book trying to nail his ass for murder (even using some very underhanded tactics), of which the sentence is death. Nothing says love like "Baby, I want you to get the death penalty", eh?
♠ Our hero, Lucius aka Luke. Luke is in fact a killer. He's admitted to killing lots of bad people in the name of vigilante justice...but that's not my problem. My problem is that he constantly feels the urge to kill people & comes damn near close to killing a few innocents throughout the novel. Maybe I was supposed to feel sympathy for his plight, but all I thought was that dude was psycho as hells. Yes, there is a piss-poor excuse for his urges to kill. Does that redeem him enough to be a hero I'd root for? Hell no. Luke also has almost no personality other than being a poor caricature of the tall, dark & deadly vampire.
♠ Ryan Doyle. He's one of those "swinging my dick like it's a jump rope" cops who are constantly pissed for the hell of it. Meh. Somebody ate my toaster strudel! Time to go blow someone's head off!
♠ The serial killer plotline. There are honestly way too many convoluted plotlines as it is without dealing with being stuck in the head of a nut for a few chapters. I could've done without it.
♠ The cheesy ass sex scenes involving "Oh, Sara! My Sara!" I was hoping the sex would save the day but damn if I wasn't foiled again!
♠ NONE of the supes who play a prevalent role in this novel have self-control. As soon as I start to like a character, he/she goes off & decides to kill someone for a bs reason. I can understand it if your a supernatural newbie, but these people were not. How the hell can you have lived for centuries battling your darkside, but you can't refrain from killing the damn mailman?
♠ The interactions between Sara & Luke. They aren't in the same room for more than 5 minutes until around page 200 & their interactions after that are sporadic at best. I don't know what genre WBC is, but it's not romance. Not when the reader spends more time in the head of the supporting characters than with the actual h/h. And yet, by the end of the book I'm supposed to believe that Luke & Sara can't live without each other & it's yung trew luv? I call bullshit.

There are more issues I had with this novel but I didn't want to turn it into a complete rantview. Suffice it to say, this novel was crap. Beautifully packaged crap. Crap I'd have in my house for days before I realized there was shit beneath the extravagant bow. But crap, nonetheless. I hope that anyone who reads this novel has a way better experience than I did because I really wanted to like this romance...but it's not a romance. It's some kind of badly written, UF/Mystery hybrid. Anyway, take care.

18.0% "Apparently Beck (who I've come to find out is a pseudonym for Julie Kenner, lord help me) has a thing for creating heroines who's common sense & self-preservation always duke it out with their coochies. And their coochies win. EVERY TIME. Hmmm." 15 comments

37.0% "WBC is not engaging me as much as I'd hoped it would. It's very boring right now & I am sick of the h/h giving each other cow eyes across the courtroom. Not to mention, Luke's "ward" is creepy as hells. She's like Drusilla from BTVS only slightly creepier...mainly because she looks like she's 17, has the mind of a 10-year-old & is constantly fingering herself in front of other men. Yuck." 14 comments

Laura the Highland Hussy great cover :)

message 2: by Catherine (new)

Catherine I agree! It's what first caught my eye when browsing for new books.

LethalLovely~Maybe I've Always Been More Comfortable in Chaos True that! Catherine, weren't you the one I was salivating over the cover with? I've seen the covers for the other books in the series & while they're nice...this one kicks their asses.

Catherine Yes, that was me!

AH Is it sweet? Or not so sweet?

new_user Nuts.

message 9: by Catherine (new)

Catherine Thank god for writing this review! I would be so pissed off if I ended up wasting money on this! All those things you didn't like would drive me nuts!

message 10: by Laurie (new) - added it

Laurie Garrison I was afraid of this. I did care for her demon soccer mom series to much. She has no sex in them for one. So I was this one wouldnt be to romantic.

message 11: by Catherine (new)

Catherine What's up with all the psycho characters? I'm surprised they haven't had an outcry against them if none of them can control themselves.

LethalLovely~Maybe I've Always Been More Comfortable in Chaos @ NU: I agree. Total nuts.

@ Catherine: Your welcome & thank you for liking it! I get so nervous sometimes writing reviews because I don't think I articulate myself well enough. It seems like almost every freaking pet peeve I have with novels was jam packed into this crap.

As for the psycho characters? People are bothered by it but they brush it off as "Hey, he's a vampire. Of course he's gonna want to kill every damn person within 2 feet of him. It's normal!"

@ Laurie: I read the first book in Kenner's Blood Lily Chronicles series & the romance was almost non-existent in that book too. If I had've known Kenner & Beck were the same person, I wouldn't have snatched this book from PBS. I seriously cannot understand how people can say this is a great romance when the h/h barely say two words to each other for half of the book!

message 13: by Catherine (new)

Catherine I can't believe that either! I'd like some one on one time before page 200!

LethalLovely~Maybe I've Always Been More Comfortable in Chaos Say it again, sister! It got to the point where I started skimming a little to get to the sex scene....& then I played hopscotch on WBC. It was one of those "explosions of ecstasy" fade-to-black sex scenes that suck so much ass. I really dislike Kenner now.

message 15: by Catherine (new)

Catherine What a let down!

The Holy Terror Hey.

Have you ever actually had your toaster strudel stolen?

That shit don't fly.

message 17: by Catherine (new)

Catherine I would jack someone up! Those things are tasty! >:|

Annie Poptarts? Struedel? Okay...! I bought this cause of the cover honestly, and the plot on the back had potential. I also wanted to support my fellow RWA author as she's in my Austin chapter. I'll give it a go and write a review. Just a disappointment that sucked so much for you all.

LethalLovely~Maybe I've Always Been More Comfortable in Chaos Thanks Jane & I completely agree with your comment! Sara did seem like she had very low morals & tried to rationalize everything to suit her desires. I'm sorry you didn't end up liking this novel. :(

LethalLovely~Maybe I've Always Been More Comfortable in Chaos You make very good points, Jane. WBC does seem very "No paranormal let behind" & I agree, other authors have diverse worlds & don't shove the paranormals down your throat in one go.

As for me adding the diversity as a plus, I honestly was grasping at straws. I didn't want it to seem like I completely hated this novel so I threw that one in.

Have you read Kenner's Blood Lily Chronicles? I read Tainted & it was slightly better than WBC.

new_user Jane_l wrote: "...but one of the pluses you mention (the diversity of the paranormals) was something I felt hampered her ability to tell the story. It seemed so kitchen sink-ish. No paranormal left behind is a way my friend refers to these stories as.

Even if your world is diverse, I don't know that you have to explain each one in the first book. Evolve it naturally."

I completely agree, Jane. For that reason, I usually don't like when authors include as many paranormals as they can conjure up. They end up never developing any of them satisfactorily. Better to dive in depth into one brand, imo.

Katie(babs) Best line: "swinging my dick like it's a jump rope"

Now I want to read this book!

message 24: by Katie(babs) (new)

Katie(babs) Oh, and Beck sold 6 books in this series, so expect more.

LethalLovely~Maybe I've Always Been More Comfortable in Chaos Jane_l wrote: "Ha ha ha. A pity plus. Love it. I haven't read her Blood Lily Chronicles. I feel like I'm reaching burn out on paranormals. I have had the opportunity to read an early copy of Meljean Brook's The Iron Duke which is probably why I feel extra dissatisfied with PNR lately. Her book was amazing.

I've heard that the Iron Duke is teh shit. I just recently read the first book in Brooks Guardians series & I'm already ready to go out & buy TID. Sorry your getting burned out on PNR. It's pretty easy to with so many unoriginal concepts & even more mediocre writing.

@ Katie: Hahaha! Thank you very much! And please tell me you are lying about the continuation of this series. Thinking of all those poor trees who have to die for Beck's hubris...*Lethal shakes head in despair*

new_user Btw, Jane, maybe you should try the Demonica series by Larissa Ione. I notice that's not on your shelves.

LethalLovely~Maybe I've Always Been More Comfortable in Chaos I second you reading the Demonica series! It is very well-written softcore porn. And the demon heroes are delicious.

message 28: by new_user (new) - added it

new_user Fie on you, LL! LOL. I haven't watched much porn, but I'm sure there isn't that much sarcastic dialogue and plot in pornz! LOL.

message 29: by AH (new) - added it

AH Great plot in Demonica (although I just finished the first one). And the sex fits the plot, not the opposite.
Who knew demons could be that sexy? And doctors?

I know, right? I usually stay far far away from romances where the heroes are in medicine but these brothers are so...WOW...that I don't even care. It works for them & they don't end up coming off like broke-down George Clooney's.

new_user wrote: "Fie on you, LL! LOL. I haven't watched much porn, but I'm sure there isn't that much sarcastic dialogue and plot in pornz! LOL."

LOL! That's why I said it was "well-written porn".

More well written porn? Lora leighs Breeds series. Love them for the plot too but wowza- the sex scenes are steamy

I know, right? I usual..."

message 32: by Annie (new) - added it

Annie Oh hell apparently I don't know how to post. I meant to say try Lora Leighs Breeds series. Those are hot

LethalLovely~Maybe I've Always Been More Comfortable in Chaos I understood what you were trying to say, chica. I've read 5? 6? books in the Breeds series & they were pretty good until they got very repetitive. Plus, I had to get used to the barbs & the knots. Nastiness.

message 34: by Kelly (new)

Kelly @LethalLovely: I enjoyed the Blood Lily books while reading them and rated them between 3 and 4 stars, but they haven't stuck with me. Just don't stand out enough, you know? The prose didn't grab me either. It suited the character, but I like it a little more lush.

message 35: by Annie (new) - added it

Annie Um yah the barbs and knots are...strange but I like them as a whole.

message 36: by new_user (new) - added it

new_user I know! Past time doctors had a chance to shine! LOL.

LethalLovely~Maybe I've Always Been More Comfortable in Chaos @ Kelly: I know what you mean. Kenner's writing in that series-or at least in Tainted-was very simplistic. Even when Lily cursed, it seemed like she was doing it more for shock value. Any book that doesn't stay with you in not a book I want on my TBR shelf.

@ Prpl: Likewise. I'm just done with LL for the moment. I have 3 DNF books by her-all in different series- & one I ordered from PBS months ago that I haven't started yet. I'm fed up with her right now.

@ NU: Hahaha. If anything, they shine too much for me. Doctor heroes creep me out. So do cop heroes. Why is almost every damn love interest in a UF novel a freaking cop/detective?!?

message 38: by Catherine (new)

Catherine How come they creep you out? (that goes for both doctors and cops)

LethalLovely~Maybe I've Always Been More Comfortable in Chaos I don't know...they just do! It's hard to explain. Let me think....they're just so nauseatingly good, you know? It's hard for me to feel attraction for a hero who goes around with a halo. I can't think naughty thoughts about a guy who treats gunshot wounds & repairs cleft palates for kiddies in third world countries. I love em for it but not enough to want to play "hide the sausage" with them.

message 40: by Catherine (new)

Catherine What about House? I would totally play hide the sausage with that anti-hero. <3

Kat Kennedy Yey! Fantastic review!

message 42: by new_user (new) - added it

new_user I think you've been misled about doctors and cops. They are not nauseatingly good. A lot of them don't even make it to good, LOL. They're people.

LethalLovely~Maybe I've Always Been More Comfortable in Chaos Thanks, Kat!

Catherine, do you mean Hugh Laurie? That's just nasty. He's so...old. *Lethal shudders*

NU, I know all doctors aren't good. That's just how I see them in romance & it repulses me a little. I like bad boys & I'd never be able to see a cop/doctor as bad.

message 44: by Catherine (new)

Catherine We'll just have to agree to disagree, I don't care how old he is. :) I think that man is hot! Age is but a number!

LethalLovely~Maybe I've Always Been More Comfortable in Chaos You nasty. ☺

message 46: by AH (new) - added it

AH Catherine - did you ever see Hugh Laurie in the BBC series Black Adder? Loved that show!

message 47: by Catherine (new)

Catherine No I didn't. I might just have to track that series down

message 48: by AH (new) - added it

AH It ran for at least 4 or 5 seasons and every season, the entire cast was killed off and then reincarnated in a different time period. Absolutely hilarious. I think it is available on DVD, I saw it a few years ago. Hugh Laurie and Rowan Atkinson (Mr. Bean) are in it.

message 49: by EowynRN (new)

EowynRN I was about to pick this for my silver book, and scrolled down and saw your review first and you gave it a 1star. Gotta go find something else now.

LethalLovely~Maybe I've Always Been More Comfortable in Chaos Eh, you might enjoy it, Eowynmn. I mean this book does have alot of 4 & 5 star ratings. There has to be a reason.
