<user_review>This is one of those gems that I found at random at the library. I know Naomi Shihab Nye from a poem that I've seen a few times. This is a young adult novel. It's the story of a 14 year old girl whose mother is white American and her father is Palestinian. She lives in the States, but when she's 14 they move back to Palestine. So it's the story of her meeting that other part of her culture, identity, her relatives. One thing I love about novels is getting inside someone's head. I could relate so much to her thoughts, insights and questions as she goes around her village, and Jerusalem. Nye's poetic sensibilities really shine through. This is a gem. Well worth reading. </user_review>

She starts out with the story of the man who developed the star gazer lily - how he did it and how he marketed it (or actually failed to market it,) and what happened to him later in life. She goes to visit Guatemala where there are many flower farms from which flowers are imported to this country, and ends up in Holland where the international flower markets take place. Kind of like Wall street, but for flowers.
If you buy flowers casually at the grocery store, you might want to think twice about the labor conditions of the folks in the field. Plus the fact that every bunch of flowers that enters this country is dipped into fungicide as it comes in through Miami. There are organic and fair trade alternatives, and I encourage folks to seek them out!
A movie that touches on this peripherally is called Maria Full of Grace. It's about a woman in Colombia who becomes a "mule" which means she smuggles drugs into this country. <user_review>This book was dry and academic, yet I'm glad I forced myself to read it. The author compares the lives of hotel workers in Seattle and Vancouver. They work for the exact same hotel chains. Yet because of governmental policies in these two countries, the quality of life for those in Vancouver is much better. Things like community centers, parks and beaches easily available. City planning things like mixed-income neighborhoods, so the low-income folks in Vancouver don't have to live in ghettos and fear for their safety. And policies on how easy it is (or not) to start a union. In the United States it's much harder. Much easier for the employer to intimidate workers at the workplace. He has a concluding chapter laying out what social policies should be pushed for (in both countries) to help the working poor. </user_review>

 <user_review>The author of this book, Ursula Hegi, wrote the excellent novel Stones from the River, about a family in a village during the Holocaust. In this book, she interviews Germans who were born just after the war, who later immigrated to the United States, either as children or as adults. The interviews are lengthy and really give a picture of the person's life, and of what life was like for them or their family during the war. Those interviewed inevitably muse on what it means to be German, and that's what interested me the most. Highly recommended to anyone interested in either their own German heritage, or another angle on the Holocaust.
I find this quote from the book thought-provoking:
"I get irate about people in their comfortable lives, looking at history, judging people who supposedly did heinous acts, and assuming they would have behaved differently. We don't - any of us - know how we would behave in a situation until that situation hits us right between the eyes, and our children and parents are involved. Germany is not the story. It's what's in the heart of the individual human being. I will not accept or acknowledge the presence of an enemy. No person is my enemy. Each person is me.
Whatever happened in Germany is not isolated to Germany. That's what gets me so riled up. Yes, we have to study it...the problem I've seen in the literature is that it is looked at in terms of Germans and Jews. And I would like to see it looked at on a larger scale. If we're emphasizing a larger humanity, maybe that's what needs to happen to heal."
</user_review>

 <user_review>Irene Nemirovsky wrote this book in the depths of WWII, as she and her family were hiding out from the Nazis. She had planned to write five related novellas, but her family was discovered, and she died at Auschwitz, so only two were written. Her daughters, who survived the war, did not read the manuscript until recently. So this book was just published last year.
The first of the two novellas, Storm in June, I have to say, even though it's a strong, loaded, word, is a masterpiece. It's the story of people fleeing Paris, as Paris is about to be taken over by the Nazis, and possibly bombed. She weaves together the stories of many people and families as they're fleeing. She touches on issues of class, privilege, love, fear,self-preservation, death, cats, beauty, parents and children,and much more.
It may have been my mood, but the second novella, Dolce, didn't touch me in the same way. It's the story of occupation. German soldiers are quartered in the houses of the French, so it's the story of what that's like. The awkwardness as they pass in the hallways, the Germans trying to be friendly, but ultimately, they're the occupiers.
So that part did affect me - thinking of course of Iraq being currently occupied and what it must be like for them. Here's a brief quote: "War...yes, everyone knows what war is like. But occupation is more terrible in a way, because people get used to one another. We tell ourselves, 'They're just like us, after all,' but they're not at all the same. We're two different species, irreconcilable, enemies forever."
I would strongly recommend this book.</user_review>
