I'm listening to it on tape -- it's read by a cast of people, instead of having just one reader as is usually the case. It holds my interest, which is saying a lot these days! Each chapter is written in the voice of a different character (with repeats as you get farther into the book, of course) so you get the story from various perspectives. Even the two Irish wolfhounds (hence the title) and the cat have their own chapters -- it's funny hearing the readers interpret the animal characters, and they do it just right!

I'm about to listen to this on tape (read by the author!) I think I've read it before but can't remember. I love Anne Lamott's writing, usually, so I am looking forward to this whether I have read it before or not.

A really interesting book, sort of macabre (not my usual genre) but also wonderful characters...it was the first book I'd read in a long while that I stayed up late to read, couldn't put down, etc.

I'm listening to it on tape...it's a great story, though I am not so happy with the reader -- he's hard to hear and understand sometimes. His voice is sort of a mimic of Humphrey Bogart's voice (as in The Maltese Falcon.) But anyway I'm very much caught up in the story.

Terrific!! It was this book that helped me get to a whole new [good] place in my relationship with my mother. (This is not to say that my mother is like the mother in this book, just that reading about how Mattie's thinking about her changed -- through grace -- helped me very much.)

This is the book that opened my eyes to the work of John Wood nad many others around the world who are promoting literacy in third world countries and other disadvantaged areas. The recent book _Three Cups of Tea_ sounds similar to this book; I haven't read it yet but wonder if it is the same sort of thing.
Anyway, John Wood's non-profit Room to Read is very much worth our support!

This is a terrific book -- it was a slow read for me, because it took awhile to absorb and think about the ideas as I went along, so I purposely read it slowly. I really connected with Joan Chittester on a lot of things, especially my own experiences with loss, grief, and hitting major obstacles on my life-journey. She eloquently describes the transformation that happens when these kinds of struggles, in all aspects of our lives, are confronted rather than denied, when we work through the difficulties and learn from them rather than ignoring them or allowing ourselves to be defeated by them, or going into denial.

I've long been intrigued by gypsies. This book gave me the beginnings of an understanding of contemporary Gypsy life, especially those in the south of France, and especially wrt family life. It also helped me to gain a better understanding of French culture, gypsy music, poverty, European attitudes, and education issues wrt the poor.
