Update 2: It's finished. Please, please let Edward's book be better than this. HTF the author thought she could get away with creating Reneesme and linking all the loose ends into her beats me. I mean, it's pretty cool that her vampires are different from all the other vampires of legend (visible in daylight etc etc) and there is no way, going by what SM said on her own website, Edward should have been able to have working, viable sperm. And there goes another thought, how does a vampire have an erection when they don't have blood flow?

Oh - so I know I said I needed to read something light and fluffy before I got stuck into something solid (I did plow through an Eloisa), but this was sitting all lonely on Joan's desk... and it's freaking excellent. While I felt so sad for Lizzy it was an interesting and sympathetic look at Mary and far, far better than any other story I'd read that tried to pick up the P&P characters.

Solidly 4 stars and easily to recommend.

The premise is the murder of a Mormon by his 19th wife - and the back story of Ann Eliza Young, the 19th wife of Brigham Young. The narrative moves between the two stories with ease (even tho I'm reading an uncorrected proof) and it's easy to feel sympathy for the characters.

I'm not looking forward to finishing that last chapter...

Edited July 29th - Completed in a big rush - I read twenty minutes over my lunch break yesterday, completely oblivious to any other movements in our lunchroom! Then got to work early to finish it over breakfast this morning (didn't dare take it home as was scared I'd neglect the kids, LOL).

The actual murderer was a real surprise too. Love it when that happens, that a book has got you thinking about it even when it's not in your hands. I didn't pick this up because of the Mormon threads weaving through (frankly, and no offense meant, I think anyone who belives that an angel of God spoke to a conman and turned him into the first prophet, then took away any evidence is nuts) but understanding why people believe and cleave to this way of life did come thru the story and was necessary to understand the plot lines.

A finished copy will be going on my "keepers" shelf at home.]]>

Brian Edwards is a well-known media presenter her in New Zealand, and while I was reading a proof copy of the manuscript, I still ripped through it. It's fast paced, easy and entertaining to read. Despite not having an ideal or even easy childhood, Brian pulls no punches and regularly takes the piss. Ireland immediately prior to and post WWII is detailed, and in somehting rare in a child brought up in the sectarian era, Brian is one to whom it doesn't matter if you're Catholic or Protestant - a very valuable thing indeed.

Totally enjoyed reading this one.

Another good, solid read from Nora. Reminded me in a lot of ways of the title set in Olympia National Forest (the name escapes me) and I guess more than a few people will grumble that she is just revising older publications to make money. I can see that; but I can also see a lot of Bruce and his work in this one as well as a lot of new stuff.

It's a read-again book.

I had to read Twilight before I "got" this author's writing style, but I loved it. Couldn't wait until the end; threw a minor hissy at reaching the end. It's a fantastic modern fantasy read which didn't leave me with too many "why?'s" at the end.

OOOH! I have an ARC of this and am loving it. It's tipped to be the Marley for cat lovers and five chapters in, I am really enjoying it. The writing style is friendly and gramatically great, very picturesque - from the opening paragraphs I can picture the Iowa plains which isn't bad for a girl stuck in downtown Auckland! I think this might be the one book this month I really don't want to finish.

The prequel to Blue Eyed Devil, which I really enjoyed. I guess some of my enjoyment was lessened by reading in the wrong order, and some by the fact that the only copy I could get my hands on was a large print from the library!

If the Daily Telegraph thinks this book is "very funny" they need a lobotomy. The only reasong it got two stars is because I finished it.

The books that started the reading bug in my house - the boys love the illustrations and the words. There's always something new in the pictures and Melling is a fantastic find for any parent who likes reading at night.
