My poor mother got a million copies of this book when my dad died. She hates this book with a passion (she would kill me for divulging this, but it's true!), and after revisiting it again I find it so much less praiseworthy. Didion's detached observations on death, while familiar, just make me feel like saying, "Yes. Hello. DUH." Am I being unfair? Or is this book perhaps more interesting/appealing if you haven't experienced the death of a loved one yourself?

I don't know what's wrong with me, because by all accounts I should have loved this book (I'm a fan of the author, and it was reviewed favorably by smart literate people), but I just didn't really believe any of it. It was beautiful, really really staggeringly beautiful at times, but it was like Michael Ondaatje was waving up at me on every single page.

I had dreams about this book (the mongoose in the cane fields!), which is a good indication of how well it captured my imagination. Not a perfect novel by any means, but it kept me moved and entertained. It helped to have a Spanish-English dictionary (with slang!) close at hand.

I have a weird relationship this book. I didn't exactly enjoy it while reading it, and found myself thinking the guy seriously needed an editor (but I will admit as avid readers go, I am pretty easily distracted). BUT since I finished reading it, I can't stop thinking about the characters. That's usually my yardstick for how good a book is--how long I think about it after I finished it--and holy balls does this novel take the cake.
