If you were the type of person to judge a book by it's cover (as I often do), you would at first glance think this book is about a wild young woman who becomes a mother. It is. But it's so much more. It's not just for young mothers (expected or unexpected)--it's for older mothers, for never-been mothers, for fathers, for architects, for lawyers, for fast food workers, for ANYONE. Rebecca Woolf's writing lures you in immediately and doesn't cease the whole way through. She's honest, sometimes brutally so. She shows you her fears, her insecurities, and her triumphs. This is one of the few books that I've ever read that made me cry. And made me laugh. And when I finished it, I immediately started reading it again. She's a great mother. And a great writer.

Rarely do I give up on a book and not finish it. This is just one of those ones I couldn't get into. Maybe I wasn't in the right mindset to appreciate it at this point in my life. The label on the back of the book was "BEAUTY". I almost scratched it out and wrote "FEMINISM" in its place. I'm a feminist to a certain degree, but some of the essays in this collection were too radical for me to relate to. It would be a great book for a women's studies class, but just didn't do anything for me. I put it up on bookmooch.com and it's being mailed off today--hopefully that person likes it a lot more than I did.

This book was not what I expected at all. There were some parts that were actually . . .touching. His description of how his parents met and fell in love, his devotion to his two boys, and how he stayed with his father as he was dying to make sure he was comfortable were very tender. Although a large portion of the book is sex, drugs, and rock & roll, it shows that there's more to him than just that. I also really liked how he's respectful towards both Heather Locklear and Pam Anderson and recognizes that it takes two to make a relationship work. He could have easily used this book as a means of lashing out at them, but instead he takes responsibility for his own faults and actions that led to the demise of both marriages.

I think I'm one of the few people that actually liked this book even more than The Secret Life of Bees. It might be because the main character in The Mermaid Chair was older and I could relate more to her situation. I love Sue Monk Kidd's descriptions of the south.

This is the kind of book where you have to imagine yourself in the same situation in order to appreciate it. At first I was annoyed by how pathetic and helpless Sam is and just wanted to scream "get on with your life--it's not the end of the world." But once I imagined how I would feel in the same situation, I realized that Elizabeth Berg captured Sam's helplessness and frustration perfectly.

An amazing book for women who want a better understanding of their body, are trying to get pregnant, or trying NOT to get pregnant. Well-written with plenty of examples. This book takes pains to expel the myths surrounding ovulation, conception, etc. and provides plenty of proof. I borrowed this from a friend but after reading it I know I'll have to buy a copy for myself.

I really enjoyed this one. I made the mistake of reading some of the reviews prior to reading this book, and was kind of leary based on some of the negative comments. I can now understand how some people loved this book and some hated it, but I enjoyed the controversy this book creates. I loved the whole moral/ethic dilemma storyline. I was hooked early on and anxious to see what happened next.
