<user_review>I don't know how I feel about this book, an account of an expedition to Everest that killed several people. That hit me pretty hard.

So why three stars? I wanted more about the people who died, more in other people's voices, and less straight narration of events. (Or perhaps just a mix of the two.) I do understand the simple ordering of what happened was necessary, even cathartic for Krakauer (or perhaps it gave him no resolution), but I wanted something more like a testament to the individuals up there, like he did for McCandless in Into the Wild.

Also, as always, I'm torn between thinking that this kind of exploration is wonderful and that it's just another code-driven bloodsport inflicted by the wealthy upon the world (and its sherpas), and which folks like Krakauer end up making a lot of money from.

Still, it's a fast read, sharply told, and a good meditation on disaster and guilt. And it has a scary and sad epigraph worth sharing, on how one explains any sort of disaster:

"I shall be inevitably be asked for a word of mature judgement on the expedition of a kind that was impossible when we were all up close to it... On the one hand, Amundsen going straight there, getting there first, and returning without the loss of a single man, and without having put any greater strain on himself and his men than was all in the day's work of polar exploration. On the other hand, our expedition, running appalling risks, performing prodigies of superhuman endurance, achieving immortal renown, commemorated in august cathedral sermons and by public statue, yet reaching the Pole only to find our terrible journey superfluous, and leaving our best men dead on the ice. To ignore such a contrast would be ridiculous: to write a book without accounting for it a waste of time." -- Apsley Cherry-Garrard, "The Worst Journey in the World," an account of Robert Falcon Scott's doomed 1912 expedition to the South Pole</user_review>

<user_review>This is a wonderful and huge collection of a series of comic book stories set in a fictional Mexican small town named Palomar, written/drawn from the early eighties through the late nineties by a Mexican-American artist named Gilbert Hernandez. To answer the inevitable eye-raise -- this is a comic for adults -- and to address the obvious comparison -- Garcia Marquez's Macondo has nothing on Hernandez's Palomar. The latter is beautiful, I remember, but so baroque and unreal. Macondo, however, bleeds, drinks, screws, cheats, loves, fights without anyone growing a pig-tail or anything. review:
This is a wonderful and huge collection of a series of comic book stories set in a fictional Mexican small town named Palomar, written/drawn from the early eighties through the late nineties by a Mexican-American artist named Gilbert Hernandez. It's funny, and grotesque. In this town, no one is carried way by butterflies -- instead eyes are plucked out by crows.

That's not to say this is a gory comic or that there's no surrealism; rather, it has sudden flashes of violence that are truly scary, mostly because they happen to characters you've watched grow before your eyes; its sudden flights into the unreal, in dreams and hallucinations, are the more effective for that. <user_review>Very funny. A weird detective's mission to recover a secret American Constitution (bound in the hide of an Alien who plagued Ben Franklin's ass for five nights in France until Franklin killed it with one punch) becomes a short, dark and dirty trip into the flipside of American culture. A little bit of sci-fi, a lot of sexual perversion, and -- no surprise to anyone who's read Ellis's work in comics -- a wickedly funny narrative voice. The plot's a little kinky, though, and not always in the good way; sometimes it just feels like a vehicle for Ellis's ideas on alt-sex culture and the revolutionary power of DIY media in America. That's hardly a strike, though -- the same might be said of Philip K. Dick, William Gibson, etc. If you've never sipped Ellis's particular strange-kiss-brew, or are a fan of detective fiction mashed-up with weird sex, death, and even a little romance, maybe give this a shot. Or borrow it. The book's a little expensive for such a quick read. I have a copy to lend...</user_review>

Gaiman, originally famous for his hyper-literary comic book series The Sandman and now a cross-over genre fic darling, takes on the old story of a young, spunky adolescent girl's trip into a fantasy world and makes it ever-so-creepy. Like Dorothy, Alice, and Jennifer Connolly, the eponymous heroine Coraline, on the cusp of adulthood but still with a mildly innocent view of the world, opens a mysterious door in her apartment and enters a twisted version of her house, and life. Everything's a little more plastic, magical, etc., but her parents in this world have no eyes, just black buttons sewn into sockets. Is it fun, or is it scary? Just wait until the dog bats...Really, this is a great book for middle-schoolers, but can be enjoyed by anyone with a taste for the fantastic. And dark.</user_review>

<user_review>Nostromo is a weird, recursive baggy monster of a novel, but it's also brilliant. The plot, quickly, is the following: An American-backed silver mining company attempts to overthrow the government of an unstable Latin American country, and all hell breaks loose; the most honorable man in town, Nostromo, is caught in the middle. As in other novels, Conrad perfectly captures the ugly interior lives of white westerners dangerously out of their element. Here, however, that's thrown in alongside a scathing sketch of a multinational corporation, and an equal dose of sarcasm towards local revolutionaries (here, the fictonal Costa Guana, or Coast of Bird-sh**). Conrad's great trick is that Nostromo feels as on point today -- about economic and miliary interventionism, political opportunism, nativism -- as it probably did back then, but for different reasons. I underlined the hell out of my copy, hundreds of little graphite lines standing in for poor literary epihanies, and I was amazed that when I picked a first edition of the book (1906, I think) off the bookshelf of an early 20th century public figure, he had made check-marks besides some of the same points, and some points that were downright scary.

That said, this is not an approachable book, and I understand why some people might not like it. It has a lot of characters, and it does some weird things with time that are parsable today, given our experiences with disjointed story-telling, but likely helped contribute to its bad rap as "lesser Conrad" back in the day. Maybe I would kind of call it a Polish-born Anglophile's shot at Tolstoy in Latin America. And while it's no War & Peace (it's got more in common with Les Mis, actually), it hits some other weird sweet spot, the epic, multi-character political and psychological Russian potboiler ground up in a pirated-from-the-future post-modern pseudo Latin American meat-grinder. You know, THAT genre.

It's endearing but it wears its flaws proudly. Nostromo is like that friend of yours from college, whom you spent hours talking to late at night about art, politics and the entire world, but whom you don't talk to anymore because they "failed to launch" or they piss you off sometimes, with their currently extreme arch-conservative/anarchist politics. But they're terrific people, idealistic and jaded, utterly thrilling and densely plotted and plotting. You really should give them a call. Maybe you can read Nostromo together.</user_review>

Maybe you can read Nostromo together.
