<user_review>After reading Mr. Brown Can Moo for the 105th time today, I deemed it Worthy of a goodreads (my wannabe blog) review. In the time I have spent reading Mr. Brown, I could have read War and Peace.

Caleb loves Mr. Brown. In typical boy style he loves sounds (not real good about putting them together into words, but he can boom right along with Brown).

This book is significant because it has impacted my life on various levels. In addition to saving me from War and Peace, it allowed me once again to enjoy Dr. Seuss. In elementary school I appointed myself head of the library club. I was a nerd (I was also founder of the aforementioned club). During recess, we shelved. Shelving Dr. Seuss is frustrating, all of the books were the same size and shape and required alphabetical acrobatics (okay, not really, but they were annoying). But shelving Mr. Brown opened me up to the wonders of THE FOOT BOOK and the Lorax. This book, however, is far and away my favorite and most palatable of Seuss's books.

(Speaking of palatable, Caleb ate the spine off of our board book-- in a 'rash and pleasure loving moment' he gave his favorite book a taste.)

Also, more significant yet, this little gem has deconstructed the way I look at sounds. When it rains (which has been often recently) I no longer think pitter pitter pat, but "dibble, dibble, dop; dibble, dibble, dibble, dibble, dop dop dop."

Unworthy of note: Mr. Brown reminds me of Mr. Noodle from Sesame Street.

</user_review>

 <user_review>I am currently taking Powlison's Dynamics of Biblical Change Course and have tremendous respect for his teaching. This book blew me away as it dug into different aspects of biblical counseling and really tore apart the meaning of different bible passages--I particularly enjoyed "Don't Worry: Luke 12." I think the title and cover capture the idea of seeing things through the lens of scripture and the clarity it brings. I had a little more trouble with x-ray questions, it was almost too much for me, but as he says, they are just jumping off points to offer flexibility in counseling. Anyway-- I look forward to reading his next book on this topic. </user_review>

 review:
I am currently taking Powlison's Dynamics of Biblical Change Course and have tremendous respect for his teaching.
It wasn't the kind of book I couldn't wait to pick up, and I felt a relieved when it was done. That said, I really liked some of the ideas and the interactions between the trinity-- they were goofy and fun, sometimes that didn't feel comfortable to me. It would be a great book to pick apart and talk about with someone (Misk?), but I don't think I could hang my whole theology on it. Initially I was a little scared of it-- thinking the ideas would be too far out there, that wasn't the case. I liked what felt like his genuine wrestling with ideas of pain and suffering. I think he handled that extraordinarily well. I would probably recommend it to someone struggling with pain and "God's part" in it. <user_review>I found this book an honest and biblical approach to parenting. While I really like Tedd Tripp's "Shepherding a Child's Heart" I feel as though he is writing from the perspective of a man who has an incredible testimoney of having raised his children biblically. Ginger Plowman writes as one in the trench. She takes Tripp's biblical ideas and gives them practical application. Tripp says when 2 children are fighting over a toy, they are both struggling with a heart issue--selfishness. True. Plowman recognizes that this is going to happen numerous times each day, and to facilitate her family's peace, she has made an exceedingly practical house rule: it is rude (and wrong)to ask someone to let you play with something they are currently playing with! This makes so much sense. I am tired of telling Emma that when I say "beep beep" her time is done(don't ask how that started or why it works) and she has to hand the toy that she picked up all on her own, that was previously uncoveted, into Eli's hands (or vv). This makes sense. As adults we don't ask to look at something someone else is holding until they appear to be done-- that would be rude.

I was challenged by her chapter on 'setting the standard for obedience' ("God wants them to obey 'allthe way, right away and with a happy heart'"). This is something we need to be purposeful about.

I think she has a mixed reputation because her parenting philosophy is heavy on spanking-- she seems almost militant about it because of the secular derision on the subject. But this is worth reading and considering. </user_review>

 review:
Reading this reminded my of the reason Lahiri's short story collection "The Interpreter of Maladies" sits on my shelf. She is a great storyteller, yet I don't have the desire to reread her work because it is so sad--hopeless (William doesn't agree-- he sees hope at the end of the namesake).

"In so many ways, his family's life feels like a string of accidents, unforeseen, unintended, one incident begetting another." Is this true about life in general? I hope not.

I am looking forward to the book club. There are many directions we can go with the discussion.
shelves: faith
review:
This book speaks about the role of the Holy Spirit, particularly as convictor and comforter. He discusses Jesus's advocacy for us to the Father, and the Holy Spirit's advocacy for Jesus Christ in the world. "His great function.. is to safeguard the interests and throne rights of the Lord Jesus in the world, the church, and the individual believer". Hession encourages beleivers to seek God by confessing our emptiness rather than striving harder.
