everyone in my family loves this book so much that when my dad told my mom it's a good thing he met her before/instead of sarah vowell, we weren't that surprised for him to say something that irreverently out of character, and we all kind of agreed with him. i love this book.

some of the stories sparrow tells well were connecting the ugly history of british rule in ireland and "transportation" of irish people to north america with the haitian revolution, john brown's raid and present day struggles to end racial disparities in public education. he roots his book in his experience helping teach at a public high school in new orleans, post hurricane, with the writing teacher who wrote the foreward. i read this book in summer 2007 and have thought about it a lot since, having traveled to northern ireland, transitioned out of a social justice dayjob with teens, taught creative writing workshops to youth, and hung out in new orleans since then.]]>

in rereading this book again after about 14 years, it went from being good to mostly good to pretty okay til the homophobic sexist sidebanter/social commentary got so bad that on page 304 the main female character explains to mike, raised on mars, that "nine times out of ten, if a girl gets raped, it's partly her fault." ffuck. guess it's not "classic science fiction" for nothing. this genre sure can be a goddamn bummer.
