The format of this book intrigued me, and the illustrations are beautiful...but I was ultimately disappointed with the story, which felt oddly linear despite a couple of little twists. I found that I felt only apathy for each of the characters once I reached the end. Overall, I think the story just needed more work and more meat to it (or maybe JUST more work). My three stars go to the illustrations.

I have distinct memories of my mother reading this to me as a child, and how delighted I was to observe the little circular holes through the bright and neatly lined fruit (as well as the 'junk food' page. I now read this to my toddler, who always insists on poking her finger through each and every hole before I flip the page. The pacing and vibrant colors are perfect for holding her attention (at 14 mos, she won't sit still for very long) and the counting, days of the week, and 'healthy eating' themes(eating a nice green leaf after his junk food binge proves to feel much better) make this book valuable for some time to come.

I tried to like this book, despite how unlikable I found the main character (or, "hero", if you will). It didn't work. I enjoyed Updike's meticulous prose for the first third of the book but then grew impatient for the story to MOVE. A little surprising, because I often enjoy writers who dilly-dally in details. The book just didn't do it for me. I've read that this is a 'love it' or 'hate it' kind of book...I suppose I am joining the ranks of the "hate it" crowd.
