<user_review>AMAZING!!!! Any Austen fan who is <s>obsessed</s> in love with the BBC version of Pride and Prejudice would be in heaven reading this book. While the title of the book cracked me up, it was the summary on the back that made me buy it and the ENTIRE first chapter which seemed to describe me perfectly that sucked me in so that I couldn't put it down until I was finished. While Jane is a tad neurotic and, at times, a little worthy of our pity, I sympathize with her and was rooting for her to find her inner Elizabeth Bennett the entire novel. The idea of completely submerging yourself into the Austen era in a place like Pembrook Park was absolutely delicious and meant to be savored. I devoured this book and was left completely satisfied. This is a must-read for any woman who has replayed the scene where <s>Colin Firth</s> Mr. Darcy dives into the pond on the grounds of Pemberly. (you know what I mean!)</user_review>

 <user_review>My sister mocked me when I picked this up in Borders; "Isn't that a self-help book?" she asked incredulously and then laugh when I confirmed her suspicions. Thankfully, this book didn't fall into the realm of self-help books that scold you for living a bad life or tell you you're doing everything wrong while forcing the "right" or "proper" way of doing things down your throat. Rhonda Byrne had an interesting way of proposing her ideas to you - inserting interesting and inspirational quotes from a variety of "teachers" throughout each chapter. What was especially nice was that she included a biography of each teacher she quoted at the end of the book (very helpful for me because I didn't recognize the majority of the names). A first I wasn't a fan of the broken-up way she presented things, but then I realized that her chaos was actually quite organized and the flow started to make sense as I continued reading. This is a book I will pick up and read again; maybe not start to finish, but a chapter here and there as I need it.

I was skeptical at first; I had heard all the hype about this book and the movie and how it could "change your life for real" and "the true secret to life" and so on. I will admit that there is a lot to life I don't understand and I'm not claiming that this book gave me all the answers, but it certainly opened my mind a little more. And what more could you ask from a book? It should make you stop and think and if it lingers with you long after you put it down, well then that's a good book!</user_review>

 <user_review>This was an easy read for me and pretty fast-paced. I enjoyed reading it, as I truly love anything related to Pride and Prejudice and more particularly, Mr. Darcy. I really liked the idea of reading Pride and Prejudice from Darcy's point of view - especially to see the relationship between Georgianna and him. There were a few things that bothered me about the book though: I did not like the image that it gave of Mr. Bingley and the fact that the MOST important part of the story, in my opinion, was not thoroughly flushed out truly irked me. How can you just SKIM over the botched proposal to Elizabeth??? That's the turning point for Darcy's character! Granted, I haven't read the original Austen version in a few years, but I know she placed a good deal of emphasis on it and I would expect the same respect to the event here. Instead, I read only snippets of the conversation peppered throughout a chapter. Disappointing to say the least, as that is one of my favorite points in the novel.

However, the rest of the book redeemed itself as it gave an interesting perspective on the story. Definitely worth a read :)</user_review>

 <user_review>First, I must admit that I'm mildly obsessed with Pride and Prejudice and that Mr. Darcy is my particular weakness. So you can imagine my literal squeal of delight when I saw this book in Borders the other day...a diary from Mr. Darcy?! I couldn't even imagine what I was in store for. And I was not disappointed.

This book gave me one of the most intimate portrayal of Mr. Darcy...one that had no place in the original Pride and Prejudice; but it needed to be done. I particularly like the actual style of the book: it included dates, making it seem more diary-like. I could totally believe that Mr. Darcy would keep a diary and the language used for this was exactly how I would imagine him writing.

The entries after his botched proposal to Elizabeth were particularly delish! It was refreshing to take part in his realization of his pride and arrogance and it made him completely lovable all over again.

The only thing I was disappointed in was the idea of Anne De Bourgh marrying Colonel Fitzwilliam. Not that this was unexpected; it was hinted at by other authors who have written about Pride and Prejudice, but I much preferred Linda Berdoll's decision to have the colonel marry Georgianna. Much better match in my estimation.</user_review>

 <user_review>In a time when reading is a somewhat escapist activity, when people prefer reading for pleasure than reading for knowledge and when mindless entertainment is the oft-chosen occupation of our leisure; I find myself in the minority in that I enjoy learning something new from what I read. In Defense of Food: An Eater’s Manifesto by Michael Pollen is no exception to that idea; I enjoyed what I learned from reading it.

That is not to say that I didn’t have my qualms about the book at first: would it be too scientific, too hard to understand; would it be belittling or scolding about my eating habits; would it focus all on the negative, have a lot of bitter discussion but no positive solutions? I found that I was pleasantly incorrect about my qualms and “An Eater’s Manifesto” is none of these.

Pollen’s approach is a little deceptive, but in a subtle and pleasing manner, more sly or coy than deceptive. The introduction reads as a conversation between friends, casual tones peppered with highbrow humor. Mild paranoia ensues in section one, bordering on a conspiracy theory involving the government, food companies, marketers, journalists and scientists. The second section compounds on these ideas while adding a negative undertone reaction to the blatant decline of our country’s health. Then section three comes in like a breath of fresh air, full of promise, hope and steps for improvement.

Had Pollen ended his manifesto after section two, the book would have just been another critical (in all senses of the word) look at our food’s history and current state of affairs. Thankfully, his prose came full circle and the tenor of the last section resembled that of his introduction. Offering advice as though he were speaking to a close friend, Pollen makes the idea of implementing his proffered solutions seem easy, even enjoyable. And the light-heartedness of the tone in this section serves as a welcome juxtaposition to the somewhat stale and arduous reading of the previous two sections (I blame the footnotes; anything with footnotes brings to mind the textbooks of college and will forever be associated with difficult reading).

What I enjoyed most about In Defense of Food – aside from the turns of phrase which actually made me laugh out loud (one in particular referring to the neurons in our digestive tract, “we’re not really sure what they’re up to”) – is that it not only made me think about the content of the book, it made me think about the content of my life. Minus my current dabbling in reading self-improvement books, I have been an avid consumer of fiction and fiction rarely requires me to reflect on my life (though I will glean some new piece of knowledge on most occasions). I was actually quite uncomfortable in this conclusion originally – after all, who wants to realize that they’re mindlessly agreeing with what the media tells them and is simultaneously living (eating) a lifestyle that will more likely than not kill me in a very unpleasant way – but I believe that this is the first step in truly making a change in your lifestyle, for who would bother making a change if you were comfortable?

It was nice to read that someone else agrees with my idea that food should be enjoyed and that it’s worth paying more for better food even if there is less of it. I cannot tell you how many arguments I have had with my fiancé about what he regards as a waste of money and how food is strictly meant to fuel your body in response to my preference for actually enjoying my meal and getting more satisfaction than when I eat simply to “fuel” myself. Maybe I should move to France.

Although Pollan presents his statistics in the one of the most understandable manners I have read, I would have preferred an easier narrative throughout sections one and two of this book. These contain the most vital information, but if other readers are anything like me, they sort of skimmed in some passages because there was no real break in the scientific mumbo-jumbo to give a layperson’s understanding of what was being presented. Don’t get me wrong; Pollan interprets the jargon quite well in his summaries, but they were too far apart from the original context and therefore I had forgotten what he was talking about. Section three was his redemption; although his original message was never lost: “Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants.”
</user_review>

While I'm absolutely terrified to put his ideas into practice, I've learned a great deal about the difference between fashion and style and how to have both things be fabulous for you! I absolutely loved the quotes and "blind spots" he provides in each chapter and I was delighted to see that they had a note about the typeface used in the book; charming!!</user_review>

 <user_review>I loved all the content provided in this book and especially the tone in which Kelly Love Johnson wrote. The only serious gripe I have was that the layout was AWFUL! They superimpose blurbs from the chapter over the actual text. Not only is the superimposed text in pink, it's in really weird fonts that make it extremely difficult to read and it is a little distracting from the true text on the page. However, I think when I re-read it I'll be able to focus a little more on it. Still a good read though!</user_review>

 <user_review>I know that being only 23 with a limited income living at home while trying to save money to pay for my wedding makes the idea of wanting to reinvent my style seem a little lofty, considering the cost of clothes these days. However, after reading this book, I now know that it's not about the price or the label of your clothes - it's HOW you wear them. The only thing I didn't really like about the book was the tendency to have very wordy run-on sentences. I get that she was trying to be conversational...but in an advice book, I think short and sweet is the best policy. Although I must say I was pleasantly surprised to see all of the Rueben Toledo artwork in the book (he is PHENOMENAL!) as well as all the fabulous quotes! Makes for a quick and fun read :)</user_review>
