Bowker takes all the elements of High Fidelity, misplaced modern male obsessed with collecting and out of touch with traditional masculitiny, and adds a touch of crime. The book is amusing and would probably be a good cure for nothing on television for an evening. It's a quick read.

In college, people get used to highlighting passages and writing in the margins of their text books. This was the first book I ever bought and highlighted for my own pleasure. There are thoughts, phrases and ramblings that should be remembered long after the all-too-brief novel is put back on the shelf.

To thorougly enjoy this collection of essays on pop songs, it is essential to find a copy of each and every one and listen to them as you read. You will learn a few things about bands that you knew nothing about. But it's a safe bet that you would want to hear everything they've ever recorded.

There must be a reason why this book has not been made into a movie yet. The elements and revelations that ring true in modern society are as loud today as were inconceivable in Huxley's time.

Dahl is as creepy in his descriptions as any "horror" writer to date. There is an uneasy churning in the stomach of the reader upon finishing stories like Pig, The Rat Catcher, and the Bookseller. Like a brilliant comedian that holds you for ten minutes until a great punchline, Dahl's punch is straight to your gut.

My personal favorite stories are The Visitor and The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar. The journey is worth the shock. ]]>

There is no darker, funnier writer than Roald Dahl. His children's stories were the original series of unfortunate events. (Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, James and the Giant Peach, etc.) In the 60's, Alfred Hitchcock had a television series, Alfred Hitchcock presents, in which he used many of the stories found in this anthology. Also, one of his stories was made into a vignette in the movie Four Rooms. (Tarantino's contribution)

In short, this collection of non-fiction essays is a love letter to Portland. If the style of this guide book appeals to you, if the odd, macabre, and sometimes loathsome puts you in just the right mood, if you want an adventure, come to Portland. Then read Fugitives and Refugees. The rain merely keeps the riff raff out and the green in. The battle for Canine Equal Rights has been won. The microbrew revolution began here and is thriving. And the people are as weird and welcoming as you could ever hope for.

I was supposed to read this book in Junior High, but couldn't make it past the first chapter. I revisited it in my mid-20's and found it much easier to digest. The themes and characters are more vivid and truer than I had remembered them being. Forcing children to attempt this novel should be a crime. The story involves the struggle of finding one's place in a class structured society, where one only needs to observe modern advertising to see how class has become been packaged and sold in disposable plastic containers while still being held just out of reach.

To describe ZMM as not an easy read is an excercise in redundancy. The theories put forth in this book question all of what we are taught to believe, and how we are taught to learn. In posing the question, what do we mean by the term Quality? (and further, how do we recognize it) Pirsig examines the duality of existence and asks the reader if life is not made up of more than just two sides. To think and question our existence is natural, but at what point does an obsession with these ideas become detrimental to our lives?

There are quite a few reasons for relocating to the Pacific Northwest, but this book planted the seed for me. It's not often that a movie is as good as a book, but Nicholson as McMurphy is as perfect a casting as possible. What's missing in the film is the insightful subcontext that comments on 1960's society that is ingrained in Kesey's masterpiece. This book stands the test of time that defines "Quality" (see Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenence).
