Haven't quite warmed up to the Alpha and Omega series as much as I immediately fell in love with Briggs' Mercy Thompson series. Anna is a very different character from Mercy. Anna has been through tremendous amounts of physical and sexual abuse and is finally in a situation where she might actually feel safe. She has a tremendous inner strength, but none of the cocky, 'I believe I'm indestructible' attitude that made Mercy Thompson's adventures so much fun to read.

Cry Wolf is nevertheless a good start to the series and I look forward to seeing how the characters develop in the future.

For those who are planning to read this book, you might want to pick up "On the Prowl" first. It's an anthology of were stories that includes the short story, "Alpha and Omega" that introduces the two main characters of Cry Wolf, Anna and Charlie. I always read through Patricia Briggs' werewolf novels as if I were eating down to the bottom of a bag of potato chips. She's very good at writing the page turner where at the end of every chapter there's some situation of heightened action or heightened emotion that forces you to continue reading even when you have other things to do such as sleep. Her writing is solid, but nothing special. It's her talent for constructing characters and placing them in dangerous, emotionally trying situations that leaves me wanting more.

This is not a pretty book. The level of honesty in many of these stories is downright gruesome but the writing is authentic, edgy, and original. This book really knocked me out - the range of emotions, tones, and situations covered by the writing was staggering. Some of the stories felt like I could almost have written them myself and some of them were completely repulsive but always in a very interesting artistic way. The book had a very "On the Road" punk rock style feel and I love that kind of writing because it's honestly pretty removed from what my life is like on a daily basis. The inclusion of zine writing and memoir style comics was sweet! Michelle Tea is just as brilliant and insightful an editor as she is a writer.

Simply delightful and almost too pretty to read this book would make a great gift. Kind of like a pop-up book for adults this book is filled to the brim with beautiful illustrations, fold-out maps and documents, and removable letters. Written as additional material to support The Looking Glass Wars novel, this book is Alyss' journal during her time in London. It documents her sufferings in the prison for children (orphanage), her frustration at the unimaginativeness of her adopted family, the heartbreak of having Lewis Carroll tell her story wrong, and the joy of rediscovering how to use her imagination. Reading this book made me want to journal furiously.

Light, clever, and heart-warming with great illustrations; I absolutely adored The Silent Gondoliers. For fans of the Princess Bride, this book resurrects the S. Morgenstern frame story. In this book Morgenstern has been researching his family history. He apparently is descended from gondoliers, and is thus, through meticulous research able to learn a few of their secrets. I must say I prefer The Princess Bride to this book. The laughs are a little louder and the comedic jabs a little sharper in The Princess Bride, but nevertheless this is a very sweet book with some surprisingly deep themes. I heartily recommend it.

I mostly bought this book because I have a weakness for Patricia Briggs' werewolf novels. The first story, "Alpha and Omega" has been made into its own series set in the same universe as the author's popular Mercy Thompson series. Cry Wolf, the first book of the series comes out at the end of this month. The second story in the book, "Inhuman" by Eileen Wilks was also pretty good, enough to make me want to try one of her novels. Unfortunately there is a decided decrease in quality as the book progresses. The Karen Chance story is okay and the Sunny (yes, that's the author's full name) story is abysmal. Recommended for die-hard Patricia Briggs fans only.

This book is a masterpiece because it does what every novel secretly wants to do and usually doesn't succeed at. It tells the complete truth while lying through its teeth in every sentence. As an added bonus it makes you laugh out loud when you should be crying and is completely devastating without ever giving you reason not to finish reading it.

After finishing Breakfast of Champions it no longer seems strange to me that people who have read a single Vonnegut novel are suddenly filled with a disciple-like zeal and storm the bookstores of America (and less plausibly abroad) in desperate search for anything the man has ever written. Ick, rather unhelpful. The writer is a Caucasian upper middle class man who can't seem to manage any advice that would be useful to anyone who isn't. It does; however, give you an interesting overview of the politicking of the polyamory community and a guideline of sorts for becoming part of a larger polyamory network. By and large The Ethical Slut is a much more friendly, all-purpose reference on this topic.

Brilliant, brilliant, brilliant! A very funny and very illuminating hyperbole of where this United States is headed if we keep trying to be laissez-faire capitalist society. I'll give you a hint. In the future the U.S. does three things really, really well: movies, music, and pizza delivery. Pizza delivery is handled by the mob which is now a franchise that advertises heavily and recruits more rabidly than the army. This book also has one of the most brilliant and amusing extrapolations of the history of religion I've ever read. Not a perfect book, but a book that was sufficiently ambitious such that all of its tiny imperfections may be forgiven. A little heavy on the hard scifi, unless you're a programmer; this book hurts your brain so good. I highly recommend it!

I'll admit I'm using "read" in the weak sense. I couldn't finish this book. I love the concept behind the story: a woman discovery she's the modern incarnation of the Hindu goddess, Kali. What I hated was the self-consciously Cosmo girl writing style. It was more than grating. Maybe someday I'll attempt to muscle my way through the fluff to see if there's any protein hidden in the empty calories. For now I'm giving it an ick and a miss.

Anansi Boys, as you might guess from the title, does for West African myths what American Gods does for Norse mythology - brings it into a modern context and makes the old gods of yore seem human and likable, if rather flawed and selfish. Anansi Boys is not, as is commonly believed the sequel to American Gods but because the book centers on a character that appears in that earlier book, they are set in the same universe. That is, however, where the similarities end. They are very different books written from very different perspectives about the inherent truths that make up the world. American Gods was, in my opinion, the more complex, intricate, and engrossing of the two novels. With American Gods you simply never knew what was going to happen next. Anansi Boys is written slightly more predictably, but is much less dark, slightly more likable, and employs humor more liberally.

In the beginning of the book I found myself struck by the similarity of the main character in Anansi Boys to the main character in another Gaiman book, Neverwhere both are awkward, unassertive men uncertain of their place in the world (or perhaps too certain of their own insignificance) and engaged to women who they love, but feel more controlled by than partnered with. Thankfully Anansi Boys takes this starting point and goes a completely different direction with it, so don't be put off by the ghost of a formula if you are a regular Gaiman reader.

Hardily recommend this book to Gaiman fans, those interested in African mythology, and those who like fantasy not set in New Zealand.]]>

A clever and creative retelling of beauty and the beast. My only qualm. The villain gradually began to parody himself. Starting out as improbably evil and eventually becoming a caricature. There's a little bit of discussion on class, but it's stated as a bald fact with little or no analysis. Fun book, but overall rather empty calories.

This is another of my childhood favorites. Don't remember who got it for me or where they found it, but I vaguely remember debating whether or not to pack it with me as I was putting together my backpack for the first day of first grade. The story is about a shepherd boy whose uncle is kidnapped by evil wizards who sets out on a dangerous journey into an enchanted forest to rescue him.

'Nother complete read through in a day. This one was better than the second book (Blood Bound), and more frightening than the first one (Moon Called). This book centers mainly on the fae who took a backseat to the werewolf and vampire plot lines in the other books. Mercy is involved in a murder investigation trying to clear the name of her mentor against his wishes that, for her own safety, she not involve herself in his troubles. I know I said of the first book that it was nothing more than a paperback novel, almost an airport thriller, but I think I may have been a little harsh. Patricia Briggs has some real talent as an author and her gift really shines through in this book, which has some tricky to write scenarios that are handled adeptly with great literary and human insight.

Been looking for a werewolf novel as good as Blood and Chocolate for ages. Didn't quite get there with this book, but I got pretty close. Moon Called centers on an auto mechanic who is a skinwalker (she can turn into a coyote) who was raised a werewolf pack. Like Blood and Chocolate, Moon Called also has a love triangle that features prominently in the plot. The back story is much more complex with interspecies politics thrown into the mix. Other than werewolf packs that are also vampire seethes and fae who live freely and now on reservations since they revealed their existence to humans. The writing style of Moon Called isn't terribly elegant but the plot is well-crafted and the characters are well-developed (though use of descriptions like sexy and built-like-a-Chippendale-dancer give the book a romance novel aftertaste which is odd, 'cause that's not really what it is either in content or story-structure). A great paperback novel that I couldn't seem to put down once I'd started it.

Finished this book in one day, so it's lost none of the page-turning goodness of the first book, Moon Called, but wasn't quite as satisfied with it. For one thing I can't seem to peg down the author's beliefs as I'm reading it. One moment she's feminist, the next moment she's positively primeval. This book had some odd conservative mood swings I wasn't too crazy about. That said I absolutely adore the main character and sophisticated discussion of werewolf culture continued from the first book and the new addition of a more detailed discussion of vampire culture. Overall this book was a lot of fun and the things I didn't like about aren't going to stop me from tracking down the third installment.
