<user_review>Oh, I don't even know where to start. This book was AWESOME. As a science person, I find myself constantly annoyed by pseudo-science like homeopathy and herbalism and the whole anti-medical establishment. This book is excellent at pointing out that not only are these anti-science movements UNPROVEN and in direct conflict with generally accepted laws of physics, biology, and chemistry, but they are also potentially mortally dangerous. As if that wasn't enough, some of the largest supplement/vitamin manufactures are up to their ears in politics and federal regulation of such products. These products aren't unregulated because they are "natural" and "safe" - they are unregulated because manufacturers have deep pockets to lobby policymakers.

The best part of this book? The stories where people turned away from standard of care medical treatments, used some unregulated "natural product", suffered even worse consequences, and then turned around and cried, "Why didn't the government protect me????????" Wake up and smell the coffee you feeble-minded folk - while the FDA is by no means perfect (we all can think of examples, and the pharma industry is by no means an innocent bystander either) they do try to make sure that treatments are safer than doing nothing at all. If you chose to turn your back on regulated treatments then you have no one to blame but yourself. You don't "trust" any medical professional with advice regarding your health but you trust a person working the counter at a vitamin store????? It blows my mind.

Also, I would like to address the issue of things being "natural". Just because something is "natural" it does not equate to "safe". Radon, anyone? Hemlock? Digitalis? Creosote? The list goes on and on... Bad things occur naturally in nature. And a molecule is a molecule whether it is naturally derived or make in a laboratory. Water coming from the sky or water made in a laboratory - if it is pure your body CAN NOT tell the difference.

With all that being said, there is a reference in this book about the dark side of the pharma industry (The Truth About the Drug Companies - How They Deceive Us and What to Do About It by Marcia Angell, MD, former editor-in-chief of New England Journal of Medicine) and I am highly interested in reading this as well. I think the bottom line is that there is a dark side to almost every entity whose main objective is to make a profit. But to just turn a blind eye towards advancements in medicine and science - just wow. "It's the molecule, stupid."
</user_review>

 review:
Oh, I don't even know where to start. This book was AWESOME. As a science person, I find myself constantly annoyed by pseudo-science like homeopathy and herbalism and the whole anti-medical establishment. Do Florentino and Fermina eventually experience both of these?

Update: After getting into the story, this book literally dissapeared from my house. I can't find it anywhere. (I don't particularly care for Oprah and everytime she selects a book that I end up liking I feel sort of dirty and ashamed and have to admit that the woman can pick a book.) I remember when I was in elementary school my friend's mother had a copy of this in the back seat of her car and I thought the title was so romantic. I didn't know, exactly, what cholera was at the time but I just remember knowing it was something bad and the idea of a love that could endure such a bad thing had to be a true love indeed. Specifically, while Wolf's opinions on the "medicalization" of pregnancy and birth are shared by many women, I continue to count my lucky stars that such medical interventions exist. I did love how the author continually discounts the "wisdom" of What To Expect When You Are Expecting (see my review if you have any doubt of my feelings). Also, I could strongly relate to the chapter on the unfairness in the division of labor between men and women and the chapter on feeling a loss of your pre-parent self and the grief that can accompany it. In the end the book told me what I already figured out from my first trip through becoming a parent - mothers are made, not born, and while there is unbelievable joy in parenting, it can be one tough rodeo ride and this tough aspect is often glossed over.</user_review>

 <user_review>I don't know how the other books in this series seemed to only increase my anxiety/make my blood boil and yet this particular title calmed my concerns and fears. This book was like my bible when my son was small. Maybe I was lucky in having a normal, uncomplicated child? Who knows? But, if like me, you don't know when a baby is supposed to start grasping/sitting/babbling/etc., this book is pretty good at breaking down what is normal. Every month is broken down into what your baby should do, what it might do, and what to call the doctor about if the baby is not doing. And the reference section really helped me. I never knew when to call the doctor - this book breaks it down very well. </user_review>

 <user_review>If you have to read one book on pregnancy, do yourself a favor and pick a different one than What to Expect. If you have lots of time on your hands and want to read several books, go ahead and read this one too. The general tone of this book is alarmist and condescending. Unless, of course, you planned the conception perfectly (Why, you and your partner didn't even take Tylenol while trying to get pregnant!), your diet during pregnancy is a model that the USDA would be proud of, you wouldn't dream of medicating your cold, you exercise daily, your desire to experience unmedicated birth is overwhelming, and you beleive that anything other than wearing your baby 24/7 to promote attachment is akin to child abuse.

I'm not quite sure how to explain how this book makes me feel other than this analogy - it felt like going to your doctor to ask for the morning-after-pill to only receive a lecture on the dangers of multiple sex partners from the old-school nurse. While sitting on a cold exam table in a paper gown. While nursing a hangover and trying not to throw up.

Anyway, I do give the book two stars because the section "When to Call The Doctor" is a pretty useful and easy to find reference when something freaky is happening and you have lost all common sense and are panicky and don't know what to do. (Similarly, the What To Expect The First Year book has useful references for when you don't know what to do with your out-of-sorts infant. I kinda feel bad slamming this book so hard when the First Year book was my bible whenever my son was sick.) Surely though, other books must have this handy reference too?</user_review>
