<user_review>I've been browsing reviews and participating a bit in the discussion over in this YA group because I can hardly wait to talk about this book with my RL book group. (the topics for those who have finished the book are here.

It was a fun/interesting/saddening/uplifting story. Despite its length (or lack thereof, really), there are several well-developed, interesting characters. The fact that Alexie drew much of the story from his real life makes it more poignant. The book immerses you in both life on the reservation and life in the off-rez school.

I bought the book because it was too late to get it from the library and was thinking I'd give it to my niece to read, but I don't think she's quite ready for it (she's a very young 13). Maybe next year. (There's a good discussion of this in the Underestimating Kids/Teens topic in the second link above.)

Some of the language and jokes are very juvenile - that's right for the characters and for many in the target age group, but it's not my thing. The book would lose meaning and effect without this aspect, but it's still what keeps me from giving the book 5 stars. 4 1/2, really.
</user_review>

 <user_review>Hmmmmm. I chose this book for my book group and wanted to like it. But in the end, I thought it was rather...meh.

I liked the parts told by Franklin Blake and Ezra Jennings and (surprisingly) enjoyed the part narrated by Miss Clack (although I kept wanting to whap her one upside the head). There was too much told by Betteredge (although I was amused by his devotion to Robinson Crusoe). The section he narrated often seemed like an unending monotone speech. I think what bothered me was that it didn't feel like a whole book. The characters are clearly drawn, for the most part, but it didn't feel like they were all part of the same story.

</user_review>

I found myself thinking of The Tin Drum when he was describing his birth; I haven't read it in about 20 years, but I need to dig it up and re-read a bit of it to see if there are more than surface similarities in the narration.

One of the other reviews talks about Cal's hermaphrodism being a sensationalist device to draw publicity. I don't quite agree. I think it's part of what makes the narrator's omniscience more believable. In some ways, it represents any quality or aspect that a parent doesn't want to see in his or her child (sexual preference, divorce, choice of majors, haircut); it's something that a parent can deny, come to terms with, accept.

I didn't give it five stars because there are some parts of the book that feel like they're not quite finished. <user_review>It took me a couple of months to read this book, mostly because it was much more dense than the average book I've been reading lately. I'm sure I missed a lot of the philosophical aspects, though.

I was surprised at how well the story was developed, given that it is an epistolary novel. The letters (and occasional news clips) were very carefully structured so that you couldn't lose track of the story. Each letter writer had a distinctive voice that was quite consistent throughout the novel.

My favorite aspect, I think, was the richness of the characters. The four lead characters were interesting, thoughtful people. I particularly liked the strong female characters because they were strong in very different ways. I also liked the Friedrich Engels character because he created a tie to the time where the book is set.

And, even though it sounds like it could be ponderous, it was really quite entertaining.</user_review>
