<user_review>The second book in the Cornish trilogy (Cornish is the name of a couple of the characters) was way more involving than the first. It's the life story of Francis Cornish, and what a life.

In the first book -- The Rebel Angels -- Francis has died and that book is about the three people Francis chose as executors of his estate. Francis was an art collector.

In Bone, we learn that he was much more than an art collector. His story is told in detail by his "Daimon" and the Recording Angel.

I thought it was kinda sad that his friends and relatives will never know the "real" Francis. I think King is getting some distance from his accident, but he's seeing clearly.

The parts of the book where Edgar talks about the artistic process are beautifully written and insightful. King's written about the artistic process before, but he's on another level here.

-------------
(written earlier)
I'm about 150 pages in and praise be, there's no smucking!

I'm really enjoying it. I think King's done an especially good job with the main character. He's strong without being arrogant, and in pain without being tormented and full of angst. His relationship with his daughter feels natural and real.

I've read all King's stuff -- some of it just because it was King's stuff. <user_review>I bought this book a couple years ago, when I was on a 19th-century naturalism binge. As near as I can tell, the book is about writing for money, as opposed to writing as art. One character is totally opposed to reading and education in general. He thinks it's unnatural, and that we should all be out exercising and working, building our bodies rather than our minds.

The book is on some classic lists, and I even saw it on a list of best horror novels. I'm thinking someone expanded the definition of horror. But it's early yet -- maybe there will be a Therese Raquin type of psychological torture later.

Edit: Finished the book. I didn't find any horror, unless not realizing your dreams and ambitions is horror. Maybe it is. There aren't a lot of people to like in this book, but it's worth reading for the insight into 19th century publishing and the lives of impoverished writers.

We've all read Austen and Dickens, but Gissing shows us a different class of 19th century people -- intelligent, ambitious, literate, but outside of society because of their poverty and lack of success.</user_review>

Makes me want to stock the pantry.

Edited to add: Finished, and will wait awhile before reading Parable of the Talents. Guess I've reached my dystopia level, after The Road, and World War Z. Aren't there any happy post-apocalypse books? I need to write one. It'd have me and Jimmy Smits as the only survivors. <user_review>This book will undoubtedly make my Best of 2007 list. I was only mildly disappointed that despite the dragon on the cover, there was no dragon inside.

It's a coming of age story that takes Joby from age 9 to almost 40. The author blends the Biblical story of Job with the Arthurian legend -- sounds like it could have been a mess but it wasn't.

I'd really recommend this book for teens, maybe even younger. People die, and they have sex, but it's not explicit or prurient, although some might consider it a bit subversive -- God's instruction to love includes *making* love. </user_review>
